Scouting Fairfield
Fairfield is 1-1-0 on the season, winning their latest game at Navy 1-0, following a lopsided defeat in their season opener, 8-2 at UMBC. The Stags finished 2021 7-9-2 overall, with five of their wins coming at home. Fairfield advanced to the semifinal round of the MAAC Tournament, defeating Niagara 2-0 in the quarterfinal, but falling 2-1 to Rider to end their season. Fairfield was picked third in the Preseason MAAC Coaches' Poll, and landed two preseason All-Conference selections in Cormac Pike and Thomas Drillien, with the later claiming the 2020-21 MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year honors. UAlbany has won each of the last two meetings against the Stags.

Last Time vs. Fairfield
The Great Danes hosted the Stags last season for their opener, marking the first meeting between the two teams since the 2010 season, and just the third of UAlbany's Division I era. UAlbany claimed a 1-0 victory behind a 62nd-minute volley for a goal from
Haflidi Sigurdarson. UAlbany ultimately outshot Fairfield 11-6 overall, including 10-2 in the second half.
Â
Last Time Out
UAlbany traveled to Easton, Pa. for its 2022 road opener against Lafayette. The Leopards defeated the Great Danes, scoring once in each half to claim a 2-0 victory. Hale Lombard scored each of Lafayette's goals, first in the 30th minute and later in the 52nd. Lafayette's defense held UAlbany to zero shots attempted in the second half, and just one shot on goal for the duration of the game.

Around the America East
Defending regular-season champion and national preseason #9 New Hampshire has already lost two games this season, matching their defeat total from their historic 2021 season. UMBC sits atop the poll as the only unbeaten and untied team in the conference at 2-0-0, followed by NJIT at 1-0-1. The Highlanders are the only other team to not yet record a loss. UMass Lowell, Vermont, and Bryant are each 1-1-0, followed by UAlbany at 0-1-1. Binghamton shares New Hampshire's 0-2-0 record.

International Flavor
Continuing a tradition within the UAlbany men's soccer program under head coach
Trevor Gorman, the 2022 Great Danes feature a sizeable international roster. Thirteen countries are represented among UAlbany's ranks this season: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Morocco, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.
Â
New Faces
UAlbany welcomes 16 new players to the roster for the 2022 season, replacing 15 departures and bringing the team roster to a total of 30. Though the Great Danes return second-leading scorer
Andrew Weiner from last year, the members of the new class will fill in for the production left behind by the departures of the first, third, and fourth-leading scorers, a total of six goals and 11 assists.
Â
Picked Fourth
After finishing the 2021 regular season third in the America East standings, the Great Danes were picked to finish fourth in the league's 2022 preseason coaches' poll. Behind unanimous favorite New Hampshire, picked to win the league for the fourth-straight season, the distribution tightened up. Defending tournament champion Vermont was picked second just two points ahead of third-pick UMBC, and five points ahead of UAlbany. NJIT was picked fifth, ahead of Binghamton and UMass Lowell in a tie for sixth, with conference newcomer Bryant picked eighth.
Â
Game Over
Adopted starting this season, regular-season matches will no longer go into extra time when tied at the conclusion of regulation. The regular-seasons games will conclude after 90 minutes of play. Overtime and shootouts will return starting in the postseason.
