Last Time Out
This past weekend, the Great Danes won its series opener against Hartford by a score of 15-1, but dropped games two and three 1-5 and 11-12, respectively. On Friday, UAlbany showed a dominant performance, allowing just one run that came in the final inning. The scoring started in the opening inning when
John Daly hit a solo home run to make it 1-0. The Great Danes extended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third. Three players singled to combine for five runs,
Johnny Marti hit a one-run single, and
Michael Whalen and
Josh Loeffler both hit two-RBI singles. Three more runs followed in the fifth, the seventh and the eighth. In the fifth, Loeffler drove in
Will Feil on a groundout and
Carson Dunkel hit a two-run home run, also scoring
Jason Bottari. In the seventh, Daly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Additionally,
Will Binder was able to cross home on a passed ball and
Brad Malm scored on a sac fly by Marti. Finally, in the eighth, Dunkel hit an RBI single, Loeffler scored on a wild pitch and Malm hit a sac fly to knock in Dunkel.

In game two, UAlbany struggled offensively, scoring just one run in the bottom of the fifth when
Chris Fisher hit his first career home run. Hartford held the lead for the entire game, having driven in two runners on a two-RBI single in the second inning. The Hawks added another run in the fourth on a wild pitch, and two more in the top of the eight, a solo home run and a two-run double.

The Great Danes dropped the rubber game on Sunday 11-12. Despite allowing two runs in the top of the second, UAlbany was able to tie the game immediately in the bottom of the same inning when Bottari's sac fly brought home Feil and a single by Loeffler scored Whalen. In the bottom of the fourth, the Great Danes were able to grab a 6-2 lead. Bottari hit a two-run triple, Loeffler singled to score Bottari and eventually crossed home himself on a throwing error that allowed Marti to reach first. In the fifth, Hartford got two runs back, but the Great Danes extended their lead to seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Loeffler first singled to knock in Bottari and then scored on a wild pitch. Marti followed with a three-run homer to make it 11-4. However, the Hawks responded with a three-run seventh and a five-run eighth to take a one-run lead and secure the series win.

Scouting Maine
The Black Bears currently hold an overall record of 24-16 and a conference record of 19-5, the best one in the America East. Maine lost just its second conference series this past weekend, falling 1-2 to UMass Lowell. The Black Bears were able to win the series opener 5-4 but dropped game two 2-5 and game three 4-5. In conference-only games, the team leads the America East with a batting average of .317. Defensively, Maine's pitching staff holds a 4.81 ERA after eight of ten conference-play weekends.

The Black Bears are led by graduate infielder Joe Bramanti. He leads the conference with 55 RBIs and places second with 13 home runs and a slugging percentage of .620. Sophomore Quinn McDaniel holds the best batting average (.341) for Maine. He also leads the team with 56 hits and 46 scored runs. McDaniel has driven in the second-most runs for the Black Bears so far with 36. Defensively, Caleb Leys is allowing 3.42 earned runs on average, ranking second in the America East. In 55.1 innings, he has allowed .223 hits on average, the least in the conference. Graduate pitcher Brett Erwin struck out 64 batters in 60.0 innings of work, which is good for fourth place in the America East.
Around the America EastÂ
The America East is split up into two divisions. UAlbany competes in Division A along with Hartford, Maine and UMass Lowell. Binghamton, NJIT, Stony Brook and UMBC are assigned to Division B. After eight weekends of conference play, Maine (19-5) leads Division A and has already clinched an America East Championship berth. UMass Lowell holds an 11-13 record, placing second ahead of UAlbany with a 9-15 record. Hartford sits in fourth place, having gone 7-17. In Division B, Stony Brook leads the way with a 17-7 record. NJIT ranks second with a 13-11 record and Binghamton is third with a 12-12 record. UMBC closes out the table, holding a record of 8-16.

2022 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2022 America East Coaches' Poll. The Great Danes earned 34 points in the annual poll, finishing ahead of Maine (27 points), UMass Lowell (18 points), UMBC (12 points) and Hartford (10 points). Stony Brook, 2021 regular-season champions and tournament finalist, was selected first, receiving 46 points and four first-place votes. Close behind, NJIT earned three first-place votes and a total of 40 points. Binghamton came in third with 37 points and a single first-place vote. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
