Baseball Returns Home, Faces Dartmouth Wednesday Afternoon

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team will be back at Varsity Field on Wednesday for a midweek matchup with the Dartmouth Big Green. First pitch is now scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Leading the Pack
  • The Great Danes place second in the America East with an overall batting average of .280, with opponents batting .267. 
  • On the mound, UAlbany pitchers sit at a 6.06 ERA, ranking third overall in the conference.
  • Brad Malm leads the team and the America East with 13 home runs and a .795 slugging percentage. The shortstop ranks second in the conference with 40 hits, 32 RBIs and 35 scored runs. Malm also leads the Great Danes with a .357 batting average and a .435 on-base percentage.
  • Johnny Marti is tied for second on the team with a .333 overall batting average. His .465 batting average in conference-only games places him second in the America East. Marti has accumulated 14 doubles this season so far, the most in the conference. 
  • Will Binder is also batting an average of .333. He and Will Feil have collected the second-most RBIs (21) for UAlbany.
  • Jason Bottari leads the team and the America East in stolen bases with 25.
  • Carson Dunkel has recorded 21 walks, placing first on the team and second in the conference.
  • On the mound, Cregg Scherrer has allowed 3.74 earned runs on average in 33.2 innings of work. He leads the Great Danes with 38 total strikeouts. In conference-only games, the redshirt sophomore holds an ERA of 3.18 in 22.2 innings pitched, placing seventh in the America East. His opposing batting average of .210 is good for third place in the conference. 
  • Chase Carroll has yet to allow a run, holding a 0.00 ERA. He gave up just two hits in 4.2 innings pitched while also striking out three.
Last Time Out
The Great Danes dropped their series with Stony Brook this past weekend, losing two of three games. The team fell to the Seawolves 3-12 in its series opener on Friday after Stony Brook jumped out to an early four-run lead in the opening inning and added a fifth run in the third. The Great Danes were able to make it a three-run game in the sixth when Michael Whalen hit a two-run double, but Stony Brook responded with a four-run seventh inning and another run in the eighth. UAlbany's final run, an RBI single by Brad Malm, came in the ninth inning.
 
The Great Danes defeated Stony Brook in game two on Saturday. UAlbany took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when John Daly first tripled to score Will Binder and then crossed home the next at-bat on an RBI single by Chris Fisher. The Seawolves tied the game at two in the bottom of the same inning on a two-run home run. In the top of the fourth, Daly homered as well to make it 3-2 in favor of the Great Danes, but Stony Brook was able to tie the game once again in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single. UAlbany secured its victory in the seventh when Will Feil and Malm both hit RBI doubles. The 5-3 win evened the weekend series at one.
 
On Sunday, Stony Brook first took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, but UAlbany tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Malm. Although the Seawolves scored their third run in the bottom of the same inning, the Great Danes grabbed the lead in the fifth when Whalen hit a two-run single. However, Stony Brook followed with a five-run sixth inning and held on to the lead for the rest of the matchup, winning the rubber game 10-5. UAlbany's last run came in the seventh inning off Malm's second home run of the game and his 13th of the season. He tied UAlbany's single-season home run record with this shot.

Scouting Dartmouth
The Big Green enter Wednesday's game with an overall record of 12-13 and a conference record of 5-4. Dartmouth won two of three Ivy League series so far, taking two of three games against Brown and Yale and dropping two against Penn. This past weekend, Dartmouth played a three-game series with Yale. The team won the first game 14-4, fell 1-5 in game two and won the rubber game on Sunday 11-4 over the Bulldogs thanks to a five-run first. The Big Green are batting a .275 average with opponents allowing .284 on average. Dartmouth pitchers allow 6.86 earned runs on average.
 
Sophomore infielder Tyler Cox holds a .410 batting average after 25 games, placing first on the team and in the conference. He has accumulated 41 hits with 24 RBIs and 24 scored runs. Senior Kade Kretzschmar has collected the most RBIs (26) for the Big Green. He bats .330 on average and has picked up 32 hits. Dartmouth's starting pitchers Nathan Skinner and Trystan Sarcone sit at ERAs of 4.66 and 4.88, respectively, ranking sixth and seventh in the Ivy League. In conference-only games, Sarcone allowed just 1.45 earned runs on average, placing first.
 
Around the America East 
The America East is split up into two divisions. UAlbany competes in Division A along with Hartford, Maine and UMass Lowell. Binghamton, NJIT, Stony Brook and UMBC are assigned to Division B. After four weekends of conference play, Maine and Stony Brook lead their respective divisions, both holding a 9-3 record. UAlbany and UMass Lowell are tied for second in Division A with 5-7 records. Hartford sits in fourth place with a 3-9 record. NJIT ranks second in Division B with a record of 8-4. UMBC's 5-7 record is good for third place and Binghamton places fourth with a 4-8 record. 

Maine leads the America East after the first nine conference games with a .353 batting average. The Black Bears have won three of their four conference series, only falling to Stony Brook two weeks ago. UAlbany is batting .261, placing seventh. Defensively, Binghamton leads the way with a 4.20 ERA. The Great Danes give up 7.49 earned runs on average, sitting in eighth place.
 
By the Numbers – Batting Leaders  By the Numbers – Pitching Leaders 2022 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2022 America East Coaches' Poll. The Great Danes earned 34 points in the annual poll, finishing ahead of Maine (27 points), UMass Lowell (18 points), UMBC (12 points) and Hartford (10 points). Stony Brook, 2021 regular-season champions and tournament finalist, was selected first, receiving 46 points and four first-place votes. Close behind, NJIT earned three first-place votes and a total of 40 points. Binghamton came in third with 37 points and a single first-place vote. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
 
2022 Captains
Leading the Great Danes in 2022 will be Ray WeberBrad MalmWill FeilJohnny Marti, and John Daly. When asked about these selections, Head Coach Jon Mueller stated "These guys all exemplify what we're looking for in captains. They are tremendous in the classroom, they've shown great leadership qualities, and they've had an immediate and profound impact on our younger guys."
