Great Danes Face Binghamton in Weekend Series

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball team returns to conference play, visiting the Binghamton Bearcats for a three-game weekend series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

  • Anthony Germinerio leads the Great Danes and ranks third in the conference in strikeouts with 31 after 31.2 innings of work.
Last Time Out
The Great Danes collected their first home victory of the season on Wednesday, defeating UMass 7-5. UAlbany took an early lead in the second inning, scoring four runs. Michael Whalen reached first on an error and scored Johnny Marti in the process. John Daly hit an RBI single to drive in Whalen and then crossed home plate himself on a passed ball. Brad Malm added the final run of the inning, lining out to left field but scoring Carson Dunkel.
 
UAlbany added one run each in the bottom of the third, the fourth, and the seventh. Daly first tripled to left field, bringing home Marti, Will Binder picked up an RBI on a ground out in the fourth, scoring Josh Loeffler and Whalen hit an RBI double in the seventh, driving in Jason Bottari. UMass first got on the board in the fourth with an RBI single, but strong and consistent pitching from the Great Danes prevented UMass from striking again until late in the game.
 
Although the Minutemen got back four runs in the top of the eighth with two singles, a double and a balk, they were not able to tie the game.

Scouting Binghamton
Binghamton comes to UAlbany with an overall record of 4-15 and a 1-5 start to conference play. After a 0-3 weekend against Maine in the team's conference opener two weeks ago, the Bearcats were able to pick up their first America East victory against UMass Lowell this past Friday, defeating the River Hawks 4-0. Despite winning the series opener, Binghamton fell to UML 3-4 on Saturday and 1-4 on Sunday. Overall, the Bearcats are batting .245, ranking seventh in the conference. Binghamton pitchers have given up 7.65 earned runs on average so far, placing sixth in the America East. In conference-only games, the Bearcats sit at a .271 batting average and a 7.27 ERA.
 
Bearcat starting pitcher Thomas Babalis has collected his second America East Pitcher of the Week award for his performance in Binghamton's series opener against UMass Lowell. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Overall, he holds a 5.23 ERA and leads the team in strikeouts with 30. Sophomore pitcher Justin Rosner leads the Bearcats, having allowed 0.68 earned runs on average in 13.1 innings of work. Offensively, catcher Connor Aoki has picked up 13 RBIs, the most for Binghamton. Second baseman Caven Tully has driven in nine runners so far. He is batting .339 on average and leads the Bearcats with a .500 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base percentage. He also places first in total hits (19) and scored runs (11).
 
Around the America East
The America East is split up into two divisions. UAlbany competes in Division A along with Hartford, Maine and UMass Lowell. Binghamton, NJIT, Stony Brook and UMBC are assigned to Division B. After the first two weekends of conference play, Maine leads Division A with a 4-2 record, whereas Stony Brook and NJIT are tied for first in Division B, both holding a 5-1 record. UAlbany's 2-4 record is good for a tied second place with UMass Lowell. Hartford (1-5) ranks fourth in Division A. In Division B, UMBC (2-4) sits in third and Binghamton (1-5) in fourth place.

Stony Brook leads the America East after the first six conference games with a .319 average. The Seawolves have won all three games against UMass Lowell and two of three games against Maine so far. UAlbany currently ranks fifth with a .289 batting average. NJIT leads the conference defensively, allowing 4.15 earned runs on average. The Great Danes give up 8.29 runs on average, sitting in eighth place.
 
By the Numbers – Batting Leaders  By the Numbers – Pitching Leaders 2022 America East Preseason Poll
The UAlbany baseball team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2022 America East Coaches' Poll. The Great Danes earned 34 points in the annual poll, finishing ahead of Maine (27 points), UMass Lowell (18 points), UMBC (12 points) and Hartford (10 points). Stony Brook, 2021 regular-season champions and tournament finalist, was selected first, receiving 46 points and four first-place votes. Close behind, NJIT earned three first-place votes and a total of 40 points. Binghamton came in third with 37 points and a single first-place vote. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
 
2022 Captains
Leading the Great Danes in 2022 will be Ray WeberBrad MalmWill FeilJohnny Marti, and John Daly. When asked about these selections, Head Coach Jon Mueller stated "These guys all exemplify what we're looking for in captains. They are tremendous in the classroom, they've shown great leadership qualities, and they've had an immediate and profound impact on our younger guys."
