ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany women's basketball team returns home to host Cornell for a Saturday night matchup.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany opened the season 3-0 with victories over Merrimack (11/11), Siena (11/13), and Navy (11/16).
  • Before heading to the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament to compete against UNLV (11/25), ETSU (11/26), and Stetson (11/17), the Great Danes hosted Colgate (11/19) for their first loss of the season.
  • Most recently, UAlbany visited Canisius for their fourth victory (11/30). After the Griffs held a 10-point lead in the beginning of the second half, the Great Danes put together a 12-point scoring run to take the lead before extending it and taking an 11-point victory.
  • Senior Helene Haegerstrand leads the team with a .486 field goal percentage and a .583 three-point percentage.
  • Graduate student Ellen Hahne owns a team-high 14.8 points per game while sophomore Freja Werth leads on defense with 5.8 rebounds per game.
  • Senior Grace Heeps leads with 20 assists, eight steals, and four blocks.
  • As a team, UAlbany is hitting 39.2% from the field, 28.4% outside the arc, and 71.6% from the free-throw line. The Great Danes are averaging 54.3 points per game and 33.4 rebounds per game with 10.5 assists per game, 5.6 steals per game, and 1.4 blocks per game.
 
ABOUT CORNELL
  • The Big Red holds an even 4-4 record on the season.
  • Cornell started the season on the road with two losses at Colgate (11/7) and Fairleigh Dickinson (11/12).
  • Defeating Lafayette (11/16) at home, the Big Red earned their first win of the season.
  • After a loss to Bucknell in overtime (11/19), Cornell grabbed two straight wins hosting Mount St. Mary's (11/21) and Western Kentucky (11/25). 
  • The Big Red closed out November with a loss at Rutgers (11/27) and a win over Binghamton (11/30).
  • Emily Pape and Summer Parker-Hall lead the team with a .444 field goal percentage. 
  • Shannon Mulroy holds a team-high 9.8 points per game while Parker-Hall leads with 6.4 rebounds per game.
  • Mulroy leads on the assist (29) and Ania McNicholas leads in transition with 26 steals.
  • Three Cornellians hold a team-high two blocks - Parker-Hall, Kaya Ingram, and Mia Beam.
  • As a team, the Big Red is hitting 37.1% from the field, 21.3% outside the arc, and 62.4% from the free-throw line. Cornell is averaging 58.1 points per game and 36.5 rebounds per game with 12.8 assists per game, 9.5 steals per game, and 1.0 blocks per game.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BIG RED
  • Cornell leads the series, 8-1.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes traveled to Ithaca for a 47-46 loss at Newman Arena. In the back-and-forth contest, Helene Haegerstrand hit a three-pointer with just 9 seconds on the clock to take the lead. Taking a hail-mary shot, the Big Red took a half-court shot for the one-point victory on November 24, 2021.
  • The sole Great Dane win came during the 2009-10 season when UAlbany beat the Big Red, 80-55, on November 29.
  • UAlbany last hosted Cornell in 2019-20 for their second game of the season on November 9, 2019. Morgan Haney led the team with 14 points against the Big Red. Helene Haegerstrand tallied four rebounds while Taniya Hanner and Lucia Decortes also saw time on the court.
 
PAST CONNECTIONS
  • Prior to coaching at Cornell, head coach Dayna Smith served as an assistant coach and interim head coach at Rhode Island.
  • During her time at URI, Smith contributed to the recruitment of UAlbany's head coach, Colleen Mullen.
  • Mullen spent two seasons playing at Rhode Island, coached by the point guard coach - Dayna Smith.
  • Big Red associate head coach Val Klopfer was an assistant coach at UAlbany during the 2002-03 season.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Vermont is the only America East team with a winning overall record, 4-3.
  • Binghamton, NJIT, and UAlbany are tied for second with an even 4-4 record.
  • Maine, Bryant, and New Hampshire have three wins each. Maine leads with four losses while Bryant and UNH are tied with five losses.

WHAT'S UP, PRESEASON
  • With seven first-place votes and 59 total points, the Great Dane women's basketball team was picked to finish first in the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. Maine was just behind them with 54 points while Vermont came in third with 46 points and one first-place vote.
  • Last season's offensive and defensive leaders, respectively, Helene Haegerstrand and Kayla Cooper were named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • UAlbany added three new players to the roster for the 2022-23 season - Taylor Moffat, Karyn Sanford, and Marie Sepp.

  • UAlbany has expanded its partnership with ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team and City Line Bar & Grill.
  • Coaches Colleen Mullen and Dwayne Killings, along with select student-athletes, will join ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team's Charlie Voelker and Dan Bahl every Monday from 6-7 pm live from City Line Bar & Grill for a weekly segment entitled 'Drive the Lane with UAlbany Hoops'.
  • Fans are invited to come out to City Line Bar & Grill to join Coach Mullen, Coach Kills, the student-athletes, and the ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team crew. 
  • Food and drink specials will be available on a weekly basis as the teams embark on their new seasons and talk hoops every Monday.
