Short Story: The University at Albany men's basketball team fell to American University on Tuesday night, dropping the decision 88-62. The Eagles were lights-out shooting, finishing 71.4% (35-49) from the field. American was able to build a 12-point lead heading into the locker room at halftime, expanding the lead to 20 shortly after the break. The Great Danes, who shot 44%, were unable to keep up with the scoring.
 
Head Coach Dwayne Killings: "We have to tip our hats to American. They played great offensively… They got it going, and it was our worst defensive effort of the year. It was not good enough."
 
Key Stat Lines
  • Jonathan Beagle led the team in scoring, finishing with 13 points on 6-10 shooting. The big man hit a three-pointer early and led the team in rebounds with seven.
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. finished with 12 points, going 2-5 from beyond the arc.
  • Malik Edmead, making his first start of the season, finished with 10 points. He went 3-7 from the field.

How it Happened:
  • The game got off to a very hot start, with UAlbany taking a 16-15 advantage into the first media TO. UAlbany started 6-8 from the field and 3-4 from deep, American started 6-10 from the field and 3-5 from deep. Malik Edmead led UAlbany with six points, followed by Jonathan Beagle with five.
  • The two teams didn't separate much, keeping it tied at 25 by the second media TO. Both sides continued to shoot at a clip over 60%. America outscored UAlbany 16-8 in the paint.
  • A 6-0 run from American gave the Eagles a 33-27 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.
  • UAlbany took a TO with 2:35 remaining after falling behind 29-39 following by back-to-back threes from American.
  • Following a bucket in the final seconds, American took a 43-31 lead into the locker room – the largest lead of the half. UAlbany shot 44.4% (12-27) from the field and 50% (4-8) from three in the first half, American shot 69.2% (18-26) from the field and 75% (6-8) from three.
  • American got off to a 6-0 start to the second half, prompting a Great Danes TO just a minute and a half in.
  • The deficit increased to 53-36 by the 15:53 mark. UAlbany began the second half just 2-6 from the field, with American shooting 5-6.
  • By the midway point of the second half, American maintained a 20 point lead – 63-43. Sprouse and Rogers both had 18 points each for the Eagles.
  • American did not slow up, finishing 17-23 from the field in the second half. UAlbany shot 43.5% (10-23) from the field and 36.4% (4-11) from three in the second half.
