Women's Basketball Falls in Close Game

SCORE: ETSU 48, UAlbany 44

SHORT STORY: In a close matchup, the Great Danes came up just one possession short before the game was decided as an ETSU win, 48-44, in the final seconds, Saturday afternoon.
 
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN: "I'm proud of how our team responded today. We defended and pressured with more consistency. Unfortunately, we had some untimely execution breakdowns. We will learn and grow from this game."
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Ellen Hahne led the team with 14 points and three assists.
  • Shooting 4-9, senior Helene Haegerstrand added 11 points while sophomore Lilly Phillips had the most accuracy from the field shooting 75%.
  • Sophomore Freja Werth topped the team on defense with five rebounds. Senior Taniya Hanner added a team-high two offensive rebounds.
  • Senior Grace Heeps totaled three steals to lead the team in transition.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Buccaneers grabbed the jump ball before scoring on their first possession.
  • A Helene Haegerstrand three-pointer gave the Great Danes the lead just over a minute into play before a second Haegerstrand basket added two points.
  • Just over four minutes into the contest, UAlbany had worked for a 10-3 advantage.
  • ETSU grabbed a 10-2 scoring run to close out the first quarter with a lead.
  • The Bucs opened the second quarter with a 6-0 scoring before a three-pointer from Grace Heeps halted the run at 6:49.
  • Working in the latter half of the quarter, the Bucs earned a nine-point lead, 29-20, with 2:29 left in the half.
  • UAlbany closed out the second quarter with two baskets in two minutes to close the lead heading into halftime.
  • In the first minute of second-half play, the Great Danes tied the score at 29. 
  • The rest of the half would continue back and forth with even play.
  • UAlbany took back the lead, 33-31, when Lilly Phillips shot a basket from downtown at 6:35.
  • ETSU regained the advantage, 38-33, before Haegerstrand finished off the quarter shooting a three-pointer with just 14 seconds on the clock.
  • In the final quarter, UAlbany tied the score, 40-40, at 7:07.
  • After a final tie, 42-42, at 5:51, the Buccaneers took a lead the Great Danes were unable to overcome. Seeing a one-possession deficit for the last five minutes of play, a final ETSU free throw with just five seconds in the contest made the score 48-44 and out of reach for UAlbany.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close the Thanksgiving Tournament playing for seventh place at 12 pm on Sunday (Nov. 27) against the loser of the Stetson/UC San Diego game.
