Head Coach Sade Ayinde: "I am so unbelievably proud of this group and the way they showed up to compete today.  We went into this game with a plan and knowing we weren't ready for the season to be over.  Shoutout to Olivia for two great goals, to Joanna for creating the penalty that Marisa so calmly finished, and our entire team, especially our goalkeeper, Megan, and our back line for working for 90 minutes to limit Lowell's chances.  We look forward to getting to continue to play and are excited to take on Binghamton again on Thursday."

How it Happened
  • For the 12th time since the 2009 season, the University at Albany women's soccer team made an appearance in the postseason.  Sunday, the Great Danes, as the five-seed, visited four-seed UMass Lowell for an America East Tournament quarterfinal matchup.
  • Including this season, the Great Danes have been the five-seed in the America East Tournament three times.  The last time UAlbany was seeded fifth, following the 2012 season, they tied Vermont and were eliminated on penalty kicks.
  • Olivia Piraino struck first for UAlbany, scoring in the 35th minute off a setup from Sahara Zingano.  Piraino put her shot wide to the far side netting to beat UMass Lowell goalkeeper Taylor Burgess.
  • UAlbany led by the same score, 1-0, when the first half ended.  UMass Lowell had actually outshot the Great Danes 7-5 in the first 45 minutes, with both teams putting three shots on target.
  • The River Hawks scored an equalizer early in the second half, in the 55th minute, when Ionna Papatheodorou found Chloe Lane to beat UAlbany goalkeeper Megan Hart.
  • In the 63rd minute, Marisa Tava served the ball into Sahara Zingano, who was crashing towards the UMass Lowell goal.  Zingano's shot attempt from in close missed just wide left of the near post, and the score remained tied at one.
  • The Great Danes drew a foul in the UMass Lowell box in the 74th minute.  Tava stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and successfully converted her attempt to give UAlbany the lead once again, 2-1.
  • Casey Stowell nearly put UAlbany up 3-1 in the 76th minute when her shot beat Burgess but hit off the crossbar.
  • Piraino connected with Ashley Ladner for her second goal of the game in the 78th minute for a final insurance score for the Great Danes.  Ladner played a through ball forward and Piraino once again beat Burgess on the far side.
  • UAlbany improves to 13-7-1 in the America East Tournament, and 6-2-1 in the quarterfinal round.
Next: UAlbany visits top overall seed Binghamton on November 3.
