How it Happened
  • On Saturday, UAlbany renewed its budding rivalry with third-year America East program NJIT.  In their only two meetings since the Highlanders joined the conference, the teams had each won once.  UAlbany hosted the Highlanders twice last season, winning in the regular season but falling as the higher seed in the America East quarterfinal round six weeks later.
  • NJIT pieced together a good chance to score late in the 32nd minute.  A lobbed serve into the box came to Highlander Asembo Augo, who drew the ball back to the PK dot to Alejandro Rabell.  Rabell one-touched his shot, which was blocked by a sliding Tiago Dias.  On the rebound, Hugo Tavares ripped a volley shot at the UAlbany goal, saved by Great Dane goalkeeper Shafique Wilson to end the threat.
  • The first half did not produce much action on goal, with the Highlanders holding a narrow edge in shots taken, 4-2, and the Highlanders drew the first half's lone corner kick.
  • In the 71st minute, Andrew Weiner broke behind the NJIT defense and his shot on goal was turned away by NJIT goalkeeper Sameul Reisgys.  On the ensuing corner kick, Elias Ehlin's header missed just high and off the crossbar.
  • NJIT turned the ball the other way and had its own attempt on goal.  Rabell was turned away twice and the game remained 0-0 in the 74th minute.
  • In the 89th minute, Andrew Weiner worked his way behind the NJIT defensive line and found himself open in the box after a through ball from Ehlin.  After settling the pass, Weiner turned and pushed his shot to the far post, past Reisgys and over the goal line to put UAlbany up 1-0.  It was Weiner's third goal of the season.
  • UAlbany held on to win by the same score, securing three more points in the conference standings for a total of 10.  The second half saw an increase in shots taken and corner kicks drawn compared to the first.
  • All three America East-era games between UAlbany and NJIT have been decided by one goal.
Next: UAlbany visits UMass Lowell on October 28, and closes the regular season at home against #10 Vermont on November 1.
