SHORT STORY: UAlbany and New Hampshire played a close game until the Great Danes pulled ahead in the fourth quarter for the Friday afternoon win. With the victory, UAlbany clinched a spot in the America East Championship Tournament.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "I am very proud of the team effort today. UNH is a good team and well-coached. We played in a spirited way in the second half and that energy got us going and, ultimately, the win."

KEY STATS
  • Senior Julie Rodijk led the team with two goals, including the go-ahead goal.
  • Sophomore Alison Smisdom followed with one goal and one assist.
  • Graduate student Luisa Knapp (one goal) and sophomore Blanca Orsola (one assist) added their respective stats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Luisa Knapp started the scoring for the Great Danes in the fourth minute. Blanca Orsola dribbled the ball into the circle and from right in front of the post, centered the ball for a tip from Knapp.
  • Exactly three minutes later, the Wildcats tied the score.
  • The score remained tied throughout the second quarter. With mostly midfield play, the Great Danes tallied the only two shots of the quarter.
  • New Hampshire took the lead, 2-1, 2:02 into the second half.
  • During a penalty corner, Alison Smisdom evened the game with a goal from about seven yards out. After the initial shot, also from Smisdom, and a scramble for the ball, the sophomore grabbed the ball and sent it into the goal.
  • Headed into the final quarter with a tie, 2-2, Julie Rodijk scored two goals in a two-minute span for the Great Dane victory.
  • After a drive into the circle led to a shot and a save, Rodijk grabbed the rebound to dodge the goalie and score what proved to be the game-winning goal.
  • Under two minutes later, with 2:24 on the clock, Rodijk scored again. Smisdom took the stick stop from a corner insert and made a backward pass to Rodijk who proceeded to shoot the ball for the final score of the contest.

NEXT: The Great Danes will close the season at home on Friday, October 28 hosting Bryant for Senior Day.
