#17 Field Hockey Dominates on Senior Day

SHORT STORY: Controlling the game, UAlbany scored four goals to beat Bryant in the final home game of the season, Friday afternoon. 
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a perfect Senior Day. It's always nice when we can honor our seniors, play a good game, and win an important [contest]. We needed to win today to become the two-seed in the conference tournament; that was a big goal. I'm so proud of the team for their support and commitment to our seniors."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first quarter, the Great Danes controlled the tempo with the majority of the quarter being played inside Bryant's half. UAlbany outshot the Bulldogs with an 11-0 advantage and forced nine corners, but Bryant's goalie kept the game level with five saves.
  • The Great Danes continued their good form into the second quarter, forcing eight corners and adding six shots. 
  • With time expired in the second quarter, Julie Rodijk gave UAlbany the lead. During a penalty corner, Blanca Orsola stopped the insert from Luisa Knapp. Rodijk took the stationary ball and rifled a shot low and into the net.
  • The Great Danes extended the lead to 2-0 with a little over four minutes left in the third. With a second stick stop from Orsola, Alison Smisdom knocked the ball into the goal.
  • Floor de Ruiter gave UAlbany a three-goal lead with 12:33 remaining in the fourth quarter after tipping Smisdom's shot past the goalie during a penalty corner.  
  • Rodijk tallied her second goal as she brought the score to 4-0, hitting a missile into the bottom right corner off a rebound with 2:55 on the fourth-quarter clock. 
  • The Great Dane defense remained composed to secure their fifth-straight win and the second seed in the America East Tournament. 
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will compete in the America East Championship Tournament. With the victory against Bryant, UAlbany has earned the second seed and is receiving a bye. They will start with a semifinal game on Friday, November 4.
