Head Coach Trevor Gorman: "New Hampshire is a top-level team that's as good as anyone in the country.  When you play teams like that you have to be on top of your game for 90 minutes.  We played an outstanding first 30 minutes executing our game plan.  The goals deflated us a bit but we started the second half well also.  To concede set piece goals is a lesson for us as the top teams win those battles.  We always want to play the best and these challenges force us to recognize the work required to be at the same level.  If we take the positive moments from tonight and learn the lessons we need to then we can have good matches in these coming 10 days."

How it Happened
  • The UAlbany men's soccer team hosted its first of two marquee America East matchups on Friday, welcoming defending America East regular season champion New Hampshire to Casey Stadium.  The Wildcats started the season ranked #9 nationally, but suffered a tepid start and fell out of the rankings.  A six-game winning streak, however, had them land just outside the top-25 in the latest rankings.
  • Both teams created promising scoring chances early.  In the second minute, New Hampshire drove the ball deep into the UAlbany box, where it bounced around between players before getting cleared away just before the goal line by Sam Philip.
  • On the other side of the field, in the fourth minute, UAlbany broke down the left sideline, where Saad Faiz worked a draw across the field to past the top-right corner of the New Hampshire box.  George Pitsillides ran onto the ball and fired a shot low and near post that was met by Wildcats' goalkeeper Jassem Koleilat.
  • New Hampshire had another chance to score first in the 28th minute, as Tola Showunmi had a good look inside the UAlbany box, but sophomore Lucas Watt was able to get in front of the shot to send it back into Showunmi and out for a goal kick.
  • The Wildcats broke the seal in the 31st minute, as Chris Pinkham sent a cross into the box after a well-defended throw-in, which Eli Goldman headed down to Showunmi, who finished in the bottom right corner.
  • New Hampshire notched their second goal just minutes after their first, in the 34th minute.  Rory O'Driscoll lobbed a quick free kick just outside the top left corner of the UAlbany box that bounced across the goal line.
  • New Hampshire took that 2-0 lead into halftime.  Despite the score the game was largely even, with the Wildcats holding narrow advantages in possession and shots taken.
  • The Great Danes had a chance to pull one back in the 74th minute as freshman Caleb Vallance serviced a free kick on the right wing which passed through the box and just missed junior Jeff Thielmann on the left-hand side of the six-yard box and went out for a Wildcat goal kick.
  • O'Driscoll scored his second of the night as he brought the Wildcats lead to three, scoring on the volley inside the UAlbany box in the 76th minute, off of Johann von Knebel's cross.
  • New Hampshire scored its fourth and final goal in the 86th minute.  Liam Bennent sent a cross back into the box after a well-defended corner from Taig Healy.  Paul Mayer was the first to reach the cross, tipping it past the UAlbany goalkeeper from within the six-yard box.
  • The Wildcats finished the game outshooting UAlbany 13-3 overall, including 9-1 in the second half.  UAlbany goalkeeper Shafique Wilson recorded four saves on the night, all of which came after halftime.  Friday's game was only the third in the last 10 meetings between UAlbany and New Hampshire decided by more than one goal.
Next: UAlbany hosts its final non-conference opponent of the regular season, Colgate, on October 18.
