Field Hockey Welcomes Split Weekend

ALBANY, N.Y. - The #23 UAlbany field hockey team is set for a split weekend against two teams from Massachusetts.
 
On October 14, the Great Danes will host a Mental Health Awareness contest. A non-profit organization, the Hidden Opponent will have an ambassador at the game to help raise awareness for student-athlete mental health and address the stigma within sports culture. In addition, the team will wear various green items.

GREAT DANE REWIND 
  • Seeing its second week in the top 25, UAlbany is ranked 23rd in the NFHCA/Penn Monto Division I National Poll. The Great Danes entered the top 25 after two double-overtime victories against Vermont (9/30) and #16 Boston College (10/2).
  • UAlbany opened the season with an explosive 5-2 victory over Northeastern. It was the Great Danes' first win in the all-time series against the Huskies.
  • Facing two nationally-ranked teams - #22 Ohio State (8/28) and #11 Penn State (9/3), UAlbany saw their first two losses.
  • The Great Danes won five-straight games against Fairfield (9/4), Colgate (9/9), Cornell (9/11), Yale (9/18), and California (9/23). 
  • Seeing five games in the conference season, UAlbany holds wins over California, Vermont, and UC Davis (10/9) with losses to Maine (9/25) and Stanford (10/7).
  • Sophomore Alison Smisdom leads the team with 11 goals, six assists, and 28 points.
  • Graduate student Luisa Knapp follows with 14 points from five goals and four assists.
  • With six assists, sophomore Blanca Orsola share the team-high with Smisdom.
  • On defense, Smisdom and junior Chiara Calicchia hold a defensive save each.
  • Senior goalie Hannah Mangan has started eleven games. In 723:26 minutes, she owns a 1.33 goals against average and a .719 save percentage. Against BC, she made a career-high 10 saves.
 
ABOUT UMASS LOWELL
  • In thirteen games, the River Hawks own a record of 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the America East.
  • UMass Lowell opened the 2022 season with a 2-0 loss to #15 UConn (8/26), before earning their first win against LIU (8/28) in a three-goal shutout. 
  • The River Hawks' second loss was to #25 UMass (9/2) in a shootout.
  • UMass Lowell then went on a six-game win streak, including three league games, beating Wagner (9/2), Boston University (9/9), Merrimack (9/11), Stanford (9/16), UC Davis (9/18), and New Hampshire (9/25).

  • Eleonora Boekhorst has started all thirteen games for UMass Lowell, earning a 1.16 goals against average and owns a .775 save percentage. 
 
SERIES AGAINST THE RIVER HAWKS  
  • UAlbany leads the all-time series, 12-1.
  • In the most recent matchup, the Great Danes beat the River Hawks, 2-1. Alison Smisdom scored the opening goal and Floor de Ruiter tallied the assist in what proved to be the game-winning goal.
  • Two seasons ago, in the spring of 2021, Robyn Murray scored the first goal in a 2-1 double-overtime win for the Great Danes. 
  • UAlbany currently holds a six-game win streak over UMass Lowell. 
 
ABOUT UMASS
  • The 16th-ranked Minuteman currently own a record of 10-3. 
  • UMass opened their season with a win against ranked opponent #23 Maine (8/27), before tallying their first loss to #1 Northwestern (8/29). 
  • The Minutemen would go on to win eight of their next nine games beating UMass Lowell (9/2), New Hampshire (9/4), Providence (9/10), Saint Louis (9/16), Boston University (9/19), Davison (9/23), Colombia (9/25) and La Salle (9/30). Their one loss in September was to #6 Iowa (9/11). 
  • Most recently, UMass picked up a 1-0 win against Yale (10/9), following a 3-0 loss to #9 Saint Joseph's.  
  • Mali Herberhold leads the Minutemen with six goals and seven assists, totaling 19 points. 
  • Jess Beech and Claire Danahy follow, each scoring five goals.
  • Myrte van Herwijnen has played for all but 45 minutes on the season. She owns a .730 save percentage and a 1.56 goals against average.

  • UAlbany has the advantage in the all-time series, 5-4.
  • The Great Danes fell, 2-1, in the last matchup, snapping a four-game win streak in the series. 
  • Charlotte Triggs scored the lone UAlbany goal of the 2021 contest. It was the second of her collegiate career. 

AROUND THE AMERICA EAST 
  • Maine is the lone leader in the America East with an undefeated record of 4-0.
  • UMass Lowell trails in second with four wins and one loss.  
  • Vermont, UAlbany, and Stanford all follow owning records of 3-2. 
  • New Hampshire and California each have two wins in 2022.
