ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany field hockey team is set to host a game-filled weekend against No. 5 North Carolina and Maine.
 
Masks are required for all fans not fully vaccinated.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • The Great Danes opened the season with a 5-1 win over Colgate (8/27) before falling 2-1 against Fairfield (8/29).
  • UAlbany beat Wagner (9/3), 4-1, for its first road game of the season but followed it up with three losses to UMass (9/5), No. 9 Penn State (9/10), and Columbia (9/12). During the final weekend of pre-conference games, the Great Danes earned a victory over Cornell (9/17) and a loss against No. 1 Michigan (9/18).
  • Most recently, UAlbany bested Vermont in a 3-2 overtime win on September 26 to open America East play. 
  • Senior Robyn Murray scored the first goal of the season on August 27.
  • After scoring the game-winning goal against Vermont, freshman Alison Smisdom was named the America East Rookie of the Week.
  • Smisdom leads the team with 18 points from seven goals and four assists. The freshman scored her first career hat trick at Wagner.
  • Senior Elaina Burchell follows, scoring her third goal of the season against Vermont, totaling 8 points, with three goals and two assists.
  • Half of the field players (nine student-athletes) have contributed at least one point, with eight different goal scorers.
  • In net, freshman Lara Behn leads the goalies with a .690 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average in 390:48. Senior Sheridan Messier and junior Hannah Mangan have each spent 75 minutes in goal.
  • The Great Danes have totaled 127 shots and 69 penalty corners in nine games.
 
ABOUT MAINE
  • The Black Bears opened the season against #7 Boston College in a thrilling 3-2 defeat, led by reigning America East Midfielder of the Year, Hana Davis.
  • Davis scored both goals in the season opener for Maine.
  • After falling in three straight games, against No. 7 Boston College (8/28), UMass (8/29), and No. 19 Harvard University, the Black Bears won 2-1 against Providence College.
  • Following a defeat by No. 5, Northwestern University (9/12), Maine now owns a four-game win streak that includes their most recent contests against No. 20 Monmouth (9/24) and Stanford (9/26).
  • Maine is currently undefeated in America East play.
  • Brooke Sulinski leads the team with 18 points from nine goals.
  • Tereza Holubcova leads the team in assists, tallying five in ten games. 
  • Freshman Chloe Watson earned America East Offensive Player of the Week after scoring both game-winning goals in Maine's start to AE play.
  • Senior Mia Borely totals 619:55 in goal with a .729 save percentage and 2.23 goals against average.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
  • UAlbany holds an 18-13 lead over Maine in the all-time series.
  • Their last meeting resulted in a 2-1 loss in Orono, Maine in the spring of 2021. Former Great Dane Katie MacCallum scored the lone goal unassisted.
  • UAlbany last beat the Black Bears in 2018 for the America East Championship title. Current senior, Elaina Burchell, scored one of the Great Danes' goals to win the 2018 title on November 4.
 
ABOUT #5 NORTH CAROLINA
  • The Tar Heels opened their season with two losses in Iowa - Michigan (3-2, 8/27) and Iowa (3-1, 8/29). 
  • Since opening weekend, UNC has tallied a 6-1 record, notching victories over Princeton (9/3), Penn (9/5), Drexel (9/12), Miami (Ohio) (9/19), Boston College (9/24), and UConn (9/26), and one loss to Saint Joseph's on Sept. 10.
  • North Carolina is 1-0 in their conference after hosting Boston College for a 6-1 win on September 24.
  • Erin Matson leads the team with 34 points from 13 goals and eight assists.
  • Three follow with 13 points each - Hannah Griggs (6G/1A), Eva Smolenaars (4G/5A), and Cassie Sumfest (5G/3A).
  • Abigail Taylor leads with 967:51 in goal. She owns a 1.54 goals against average and a .556 save percentage.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Two America East teams lead with a 2-0 record - Maine and California.
  • UAlbany currently sits third in the conference with a 1-0 record.
  • UMass Lowell, UC Davis, and Stanford opened the conference season 1-1.
  • Monmouth (0-1), Vermont (0-2), and New Hampshire (0-2) are still looking for an America East win.
