Volleyball Goes to Five Sets at Binghamton

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes won two sets but the Bearcats came back to win the match in the final two sets of competition in Vestal, N.Y.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "Tough start to our conference play. We had opportunities to finish the match and unfortunately weren't able to capitalize. Great work by Binghamton and their fight in this match."
 
KEY STATS
  • Freshman Oren Abutbul led the team's offense with 15 kills; junior Kamara Kelly and senior Regan Wright followed with 11 each.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken led the defense with 20 digs, Kelly followed with 13.
  • Junior Malea Stanton tallied 28 assists for a team-high. Freshman Elaina Wamhoff totaled 21 assists to follow.
  • Freshman Anissia Wong led the blockers with five total blocks.
  • As a team, the Great Danes totaled 11 service aces - Kelly led with four, Macken tallied 3, and graduate student Danielle Tedesco (2), Wamhoff (1), and Stanton (1) followed.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes tallied the first point of the match with a kill from Anissia Wong.
  • After the Bearcats tied the set at 10-10, UAlbany earned a five-point run to take back the lead. The Great Danes continued with the lead until Binghamton went on their own five-point run to tie the score at 23 before earning the first set win, 26-24.
  • In the second set, UAlbany compiled one three-point run and two four-point runs early on to earn a 13-7 lead.
  • The set continued back and forth until the Great Danes took the 25-16 win.
  • In the third set, the Bearcats earned the lead early on but UAlbany quickly earned a 9-8 lead before tallying two five-point scoring runs for a 21-13 lead.
  • The Great Danes finished the set with the win, 25-17.
  • Both the fourth and the fifth set went into extra points, being decided by the required two-point difference.
  • Binghamton held the lead for much of the fourth set but a 7-1 scoring run by UAlbany put the set within one point before the Great Danes tied the score at 24. The Bearcats took the eventual set win, 31-29.
  • Both teams earned early scoring runs in the fifth set but Binghamton held on to the lead for much of the set. UAlbany grabbed three straight points to take the lead, 14-13, for the first time during the fifth set. The Bearcats came back and won, 16-14, to take the match.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes return home to host Stony Brook on October 3.
