Head Coach Trevor Gorman: "We're happy to get the first conference win today against a dangerous NJIT team. They play well and we had to be sharp to take away what they do well. I thought our guys stuck to the task well and played some good stuff as the game went on. Great to find the moment to win it and looking forward to the second half of the season now."
Â
How it Happened
- For the second-straight game, the Great Danes scored early in the second half, notching a goal before halftime in only their second game of the season. Adam Aoumaich's score went largely uncontested after an odd sequence in which NJIT stopped defending thinking UAlbany was offsides.Â
- Passes from Haflidi Sigurdason and Austin DaSilva left Aoumaich one-on-one with the NJIT goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys, with no Highlander defender nearby. Aoumaich's subsequent goal amid the confusion put UAlbany up 1-0 in the seventh minute.
- NJIT regrouped and responded quickly, when Tomas Jorge received a cross along the right side, cut towards the middle, and fired a shot from nearly 30 yards out. The shot deflected off a UAlbany defender and past Great Danes goalkeeper Carlos Tofern to tie the game 1-1 in the 11th minute.
- UAlbany outshot NJIT 5-1 over the first 45 minutes. Except for the goal-against, Tofern went untested in the first half.
- NJIT made up for their shot deficit in the second half, outshooting UAlbany 5-3 after the break. However, it was not enough to break through. In the 68th minute, Neophytos Scottis played a through ball up to Andrew Weiner, who broke free from an NJIT defender and side-stepped a charging Reisgys to score on an open goal and put UAlbany up 2-1.
- UAlbany held steady through the remainder of the game to claim victory over NJIT in their first meeting as America East opponents. It was also UAlbany's first conference win of the season.
Next: UAlbany visits Dartmouth on October 5.
