Field Hockey Splits Upcoming Weekend against Wagner, UMass

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany field hockey team will split its second weekend of play, heading on the road for a Friday afternoon game before returning home on Sunday.
 
Masks are required for all fans not fully vaccinated at both locations.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • The Great Danes opened the season with a 5-1 win over Colgate (9/3) before falling 2-1 against Fairfield (9/5).
  • Senior Robyn Murray, assisted by sophomore Charlotte Triggs and freshman Alison Smisdom, scored the first goal of the season against Colgate.
  • Smisdom followed with the eventual game-winner while senior Elaina Burchell scored the third and fourth goals.
  • Junior Julie Rodijk tallied the final UAlbany score, unassisted, against Colgate.
  • Against Fairfield, Smisdom scored the first goal of the game.
  • Overall, Burchell and Smisdom lead the team with five points from two goals and one point each.
  • Freshman Lara Behn leads the goalies with a .714 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average from 90 minutes on the field. Senior Sheridan Messier and junior Hannah Mangan follow with 15 minutes each.
  • The Great Danes have totaled 34 shots and 12 penalty corners in two games.
 
ABOUT WAGNER
  • The Seahawks opened the season with a 5-1 loss at Hofstra.
  • Laura Van Hamburg scored the lone goal with an assist from Liselotte Koop during a penalty corner.
  • Goalkeeper Erin Franklin made seven saves for a .583 save percentage. Daisy Ruhle took over in net for the final six minutes of the game.
  • Overall, Wagner tallied eight shots and five corners in its first game of the season.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE SEAHAWKS
  • UAlbany holds a 1-0 lead over Wagner. 
  • The Seahawks and the Great Danes first met in 2019 for a 4-0 UAlbany win. Mackenzie Hilditch scored the fourth goal of the game with a deflected ball. Sheridan Messier played the final quarter for 15 minutes of play. Current volunteer assistant coach, Dana Bozek, tallied three points from one goal and one assist.
 
ABOUT UMASS
  • The Minutewomen opened the season 2-0.
  • First, UMass played Northeastern (8/27) for a 3-0 win followed by a 3-2 overtime win against Maine (8/29).
  • Before heading to Albany, the Minutewomen will host Vermont for a contest on Friday.
  • Georgie McTear leads the team with two goals and four points.
  • Amalie Green has assisted the most goals - three.
  • Steph Gottwals scored the game-winning goal against Maine.
  • Marlise van Tonder has spent all 125 minutes in goal with a .818 save percentage and a 0.97 goals against average.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE MINUTEWOMEN
  • UAlbany holds a 5-3 lead over the Minutewomen.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes took a 2-1 win on the road in 2019. While none of the current team earned any points, current volunteer assistant coach, Dana Bozek, scored the first goal of the game unassisted.
  • UAlbany was scheduled to host UMass during the 2020-21 season but the game was canceled.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • After the first weekend of play, UMass Lowell leads with a 1-0 record. California, Monmouth, New Hampshire, UAlbany, and Vermont split second with 1-1 records while UC Davis is 0-1 and Maine and Stanford hold 0-2 records.
