ALBANY, N.Y. - Heading into the team's only home event of the season this Sunday against Siena College, the University at Albany women's golf team honors its lone graduating student-athlete -
Megan Henry.
Henry, a native of Epping, Essex, joined the UAlbany team prior to the 2016-17 season. She has been a major contributor to the team since her freshman campaign, playing a key role in both MAAC Championship runs the Great Danes made in 2018 and 2019.
"From day one of Megan's freshman year, she was bubbly, the team jokester and a visible leader," said head coach
Colleen Cashman-McSween. "She's been a coach's dream as well as the glue to the program. She has taken on the leadership role in many forms with her fellow teammates, as they trust her guidance. She has improved steadily in the classroom throughout her years, even earning a 4.0 one semester. On the golf course, she has competed in every event except two in her career, the very first tournament of her freshman season and this spring's Wofford event due to injury. It has been a running joke that I questioned my judgement in recruiting her the first time I saw her hit balls on the driving range at our first practice, she couldn't stop shanking the ball. But through the years, I knew that I had a gem of a person and a college golfer."
Henry has participated in three MAAC Championships throughout her career. In 2017, she shot 79-83-77 to finish at +23, tying for 10
th place. She followed her freshman year up with a third place showing in 2018, shooting 73-80-75 (+12) en route to the Great Danes' second MAAC title in program history. Henry had yet another strong showing in 2019, helping UAlbany defend its title to claim back-to-back MAAC Championships. She finished in 11
th place overall after shooting 77-77-81 (+19).
"The UAlbany golf team has been my family for the last five years. When the season got canceled in 2020 I knew that wasn't the end for me, so coming back for another year was a chance I couldn't resist," said Henry. "This team really is a family and that is what I will miss the most. Knowing you have your teammates around you to experience college with is great and has been so important for me. This family environment is clear throughout the whole athletic community. I will miss staying in houses for tournaments and playing games and just laughing and having a good time while competing. These five years have shaped me into the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity."
This season, Henry has continued to impress. She placed second on the team and 64
th overall at the Georgia State Invitational, shooting 78-82-78 to finish at +22. The Epping, Essex native led the team her next time out at the Tumble Brook Invitational, tying for third place among 40+ competitors after shooting 74 (+2). Her last time on the course, Henry shot 80-76 (+12) at the Sacred Heart Spring Invitational. She heled lead the Great Danes to a fifth-place finish, beating out every MAAC school that was competing in the tournament.
Coach Cashman-McSween added "She can be counted on in any situation. Any coach would have been lucky to have Megan represent them at their university, and I feel so fortunate that she chose to be a Great Dane! Megan will be greatly missed and I look forward to see what she does with her future. It was truly a blessing to have Megan back for her fifth year and I'm very lucky to not only call her one of my players, but also a friend for hopefully a very long time!"
Henry graduated from St. Edmunds College in England before coming to UAlbany. She received her B.A. in Psychology in the spring of 2020 and is set to receive her graduate certificate in Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity this spring.
