Bats Come Alive in Dover, Softball Takes Two Against Delaware State

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team collected two wins in Dover this afternoon, defeating Delaware State 7-2 and 11-1. The bats were hot as the Great Danes totaled 24 hits and drove in 18 runs. Big days from Katie Falotico (five RBI), Madison Petrella (four RBI), Tara Driver (three RBI), and Caitlyn Mitros (three RBI) led the way.
 
Key Stats Game One:
  • Falotico had a great day at the plate, tallying four RBIs on one hit. She started the scoring for UAlbany by hitting a two-run homerun in the first inning, and added her final two RBIs later in the day on a groundout and a sac fly.
  • Tara Driver collected the final three RBIs for Albany off a three-run homerun to center in the first inning.
  • Collecting multiple hits were Mitros (3), Alexis Phillips (2), Morgan Petty (2), and Kelly Barkevich (2).
  • Maranda Jimenez pitched all seven innings for the Great Danes, allowing just one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts.
Key Stats Game Two:
  • The Great Danes collected 13 total hits.
  • Falotico and Mitros led the way with hits, both tallying three. Mitros collected three RBIs in the game, Falotico collected one.
  • Petrella drove in four runs off two hits, a homerun and a double.
  • Briana Garrett pitched fourt innings, allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Adian Sheeren pitched the final frame, pitching a clean one-two-three inning.
How it Happened Game One:
  • UAlbany came out of the gates hot, scoring five runs on four hits in the first inning. Falotico homered to left, scoring Phillips to put the Great Danes up 2-0. Driver followed Falotico's lead later in the inning, sending a ball over the center field fence to score three more runs and increase the lead to 5-0.
  • Delaware State was able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning following a throwing error.
  • The Hornets added another run in the third following a homerun from Meyer.
  • Falotico picked up her third RBI of the day in the fourth, grounding out to the pitcher and advancing Mitros home.
  • Falotico concluded her dominant day by driving in the final run for the Great Danes in the sixth, flying out to center and again advancing Mitros across home plate to increase the lead to 7-2.
How it Happened Game Two:
  • The Great Danes once again came out hot, scoring five runs to start the ballgame. Petrella started things off with a two-RBI double, scoring Falotico and Phillips. Jimenez followed with a single up the middle to score another two runs, Petrella and Petty. Finally, Mitros added one more with a single down the left field line, scoring Jimenez.
  • Delaware State scored its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the first off of a triple from Barranger.
  • In the third, Mitros hit a single to left that scored Barkevich to increase the lead to 6-1.
  • Petrella hit one out of the Hornets Nest in the fourth to grab another two RBIs, scoring Falotico.
  • The Great Danes scored three more runs in the fifth to end the game early. Mitros singled to score Hammond and Adams hit a sac fly to drive in Drumgole. To increase the lead to 10 runs, Falotico hit one up the gut to score Mitros for the last run of theafternoon.
Next: UAlbany is back in action tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader against Delaware State. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Dover.
