Softball Completes Four Game Weekend Sweep of Delaware State

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team completed the four-game weekend sweep of Delaware State this afternoon, taking both games in Sunday's doubleheader. Wendi Hammond pitched a gem in game one, not allowing any earned runs and giving up only two hits. Madison Petrella hit a grand slam in game one, with Maranda Jimenez sending two out of the park in game two. In total, the Great Danes put up 28 runs today and 46 throughout the weekend.

Coach Chris Cannata: "Happy with today's outcome and the fact we were able to stay consistent all weekend. Both solid pitching and well-timed hitting got us through all four games. This was an important weekend for us to get right, and I think the entire team played well ahead of another weekend of conference play coming up."
 
Key Stats Game One:
  • Hammond started in the circle, going all six innings without allowing an earned run. She finished giving up only two hits with seven strikeouts.
  • Petrella collected four RBIs with one swing of the bat, sending a homerun over the center field wall for a grand slam. She finished going 1-for-3 with the homerun and a walk.
  • Alexis Phillips snagged three RBIs off two hits, crossing home plate twice herself while also generating two walks.
  • Phillips and Briana Garrett both had two hits in the game.
  • Nine different UAlbany players recorded a hit.
  • The Great Danes showed patience at the plate all game, drawing nine total walks.
Key Stats Game Two:
  • Chloe Lewis started in the circle, going 4.2 innings. She ended the afternoon giving up five earned runs off of nine hits with two strikeouts. Garrett finished the remaining 2.1 innings allowing just two hits with one strikeout.
  • Maranda Jimenez had herself a day, bringing in five RBIs off of two homeruns, finishing with three hits.
  • Also collecting multiple RBIs were Madison Petrella (3), Katie Falotico (2), and Morgan Petty (2). Emma Adams added an RBI off of a solo homerun.
  • UAlbany scored 15 runs off 15 hits and four walks.
How it Happened Game One:
  • Drumgole got the scoring going with a single in the second, scoring Barkevich.
  • The Hornets got their lone runs of the game in the third, scoring first off of a single from Megoza then off of single from Cunnigan, both unearned.
  • The Great Danes scored four in the fourth to re-take the lead, 5-2. Phillips walked with the bases loaded to score Barkevich, then Falotico singled to bring in two more runs, Mitros and Garrett. Petty finished the inning off with an infield single, scoring Phillips.
  • Garrett collected an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to four runs.
  • Petrella sent one over the center field wall in the sixth with the bases loaded, collecting a grand slam and doubling UAlbany's lead. Adams (1) and Phillips (2) both collected RBIs later in the inning to make the score 13-2.
How it Happened Game Two:
  • Delaware State was first to strike in game two, collecting two runs in the first inning off of a wild pitch.
  • Adams got UAlbany on the board in the second, reaching on a throwing error and scoring Jimenez.
  • The Hornets increased the lead back to two runs in the bottom half of the second off of an RBI single from Johnson.
  • Petrella tied the game for the Great Danes the next inning, bringing in two RBIs off a single up the middle (Falotico and Phillips).
  • UAlbany went to work in the fourth, having five runs cross the plate. Adams hit a solo shot over the center field fence to start things off. Falotico added another run with an RBI double, scoring Phillips, before Jimenez hit a three-run shot out of the park to increase the lead to five.
  • Delaware State's final three runs came in the bottom of the fifth, where Selden singled to score Cunnigan and Melgoza doubled down the left field line to score Selden and Garcia.
  • UAlbany responded by scoring four runs in the sixth and another three in the seventh. In the sixth, Petty tripled to score Phillips, Petrella singled to score Petty, and Jimenez hit her second homer of the day, a two-run shot, scoring Srokowski. In the seventh, Falotico doubled to score Mitros and Petty put the ball in play for two more runs to cross the plate off of an error from Delaware.
Next: UAlbany returns to America East play next weekend when the team hosts UMBC at Albany Field for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
