Short Story: The University at Albany softball team split a midweek doubleheader with Central Connecticut State University. Game one heroics came up just short, with the Great Danes rallying to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Katie Falotico led the way for a Great Danes win in game two with a grand slam.
Coach Chris Cannata: "We got a great pitching performance in game two, combined with Falotico's big hit to get the win. We will look to bring momentum into this important conference weekend."
Key Stats Game One:
- Kelly Barkevich finished with two hits, one of which was a homerun, and two RBIs.
- Katie Falotico was busy on the base path, crossing home plate three times throughout the game. She also recorded one hit and one RBI.
- Madison Petrella joins Barkevich as the only Great Dane with multiple hits, also finishing with two.
- Morgan Petty finished with two RBIs after hitting a triple in the seventh, the first runs of UAlbany's biggest inning.
Key Stats Game Two:
- Falotico had the big bat in game two, driving in four runs off a game-changing grand slam.
- Petty fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle, collecting a single, double, and a homerun. She also scored three runs and stole a base. Caitlyn Mitros joined her with three hits of her own from the nine spot.
- Briana Garrett stood tall in the circle, tossing all seven innings for UAlbany and collecting the win.
- Petrella again finished with multiple hits, collecting two as well as another adding two RBIs.
How it Happened Game One:
- CCSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first off an RBI single followed by a two RBI homerun from Paige Stringer.
- Barkevich got the first UAlbany runs of the day in the second, sending a two-run shot over the center field fence.
- CCSU was able to grab three more runs in the third before Petrella got the Great Danes back in the scoring mood with an RBI single in the fourth.
- In the sixth, CCSU's Backlund hit a solo homerun for the Blue Devils' seventh run of the afternoon. The Great Danes responded their next time up with a run of their own to make the score 7-4.
- The Blue Devils would increase the lead to 9-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, where UAlbany showed some late-game heroics. Petty tripled to right to drive in two runs, Falotico reached on an error for another RBI, and Petrella singled to cap the four-run inning. That would be the final run UAlbany would score though, falling just short, 8-9.
How it Happened Game Two:
- UAlbany was first to strike in game two, with Petty scoring on a Petrella single. CCSU would tie the game in the second off an RBI single from Bruyns.
- Petrella once again found an RBI, this time in the third. She doubled, again scoring Petty.
- Falotico would open the game up the next inning, sending a ball over the fence for a grand slam to make the score 6-1.
- UAlbany would add two runs in the sixth to make the score 8-2 heading into the final frame, where the Blue Devils would not go down easy. CCSU scored four runs and brought the tying run to the plate before finally falling and splitting the doubleheader.
