Short Story: The University at Albany softball team got back to its winning wayts with a doubleheader sweep of America East foe Binghamton. Strong pitching led the Great Danes, with Maranda Jimenez pitching five innings in game one (two earned runs) and Briana Garrett throwing a one hit gem in game two. UAlbany outscored Binghamton 17-4 over the two games.
Coach Chris Cannata: "We took a step forward today. Our energy was great, and our two great pitching performances combined with clutch hitting and a more solid defensive effort was just what we needed."
 
Key Stats Game One:
  • Maranda Jimenez shined bright in the circle for UAlbany in game one, tossing all five innings and allowing just two runs on three hits. The senior from Riverside, California, struck out six batters throughout the game and walked three.
  • Morgan Petty led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and also drawing a walk.
  • Madison Petrella set the tone early with a three-run homerun in the first.
  • Tara Driver drove in two RBIs off a double in the second inning.
  • Three Great Danes finished with multiple hits: Petty, Jimenez, and Kelly Barkevich.  
Key Stats Game Two:
  • Briana Garrett threw a beauty for UAlbany in game two. The junior threw all seven innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run, striking out four.
  • Four different Great Danes recorded two hits: Petty, Caitlin Mitros, Katie Falotico, and Alexis Phillips.
  • Falotico finished going 2-for-4, including a two-run homerun. She also led the team in runs with two.
  • Madison Petrella showed patience at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a single and two walks.
  • Throughout the doubleheader, UAlbany outscored Binghamton 17-4 over twelve innings.
How it Happened Game One:
  • Petrella got the scoring party started for the Great Danes in game one. With Petty on second and Falotico on first, Petrella sent one deep over the left field wall to put UAlbany up 3-0 right out of the gates.
  • First inning scoring didn't stop there, with Drumgole grabbing an RBI off a fielder's choice to score Jimenez. Barkevich would score next on a wild pitch to put UAlbany up 5-0 before Binghamton ever came to bat.
  • The Bearcats responded with their first run in the bottom of the first inning, a sac fly to center from Alvarez.
  • UAlbany added four more runs in the second inning, increasing the lead to 9-1. Petty started with a solo shot to left before Barkevich singled in Petrella, then Driver doubled in Barkevich and Petrella.
  • Both teams added a run each in the fourth. UAlbany's Srokowski scored on a wild pitch, and Binghamton's Morgan doubled in a run to make the score 10-2.
  • Petty continued her big day in the fifth with a single to center, scoring Mitros for the final run of the game.
How it Happened Game Two:
  • Petty shot the Great Danes out to the lead in the second, collecting two RBIs off a single, scoring Barkevich and Mitros.
  • UAlbany added some insurance runs in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 4-0. Barkevich hit a sac fly to center, scoring Petty, then Drumgole singled to left, scoring Falotico.
  • Falotico homered in the sixth to center, scoring Phillips, to drive up UAlbany's lead to 6-0.
  • The Bearcats scored their lone runs of the game in the bottom half of the sixth off a Pappas triple, scoring Morgan and Herskowitz.
Next: UAlbany is back in action tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader against America East foe Binghamton. First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 p.m. from Binghamton's Softball Complex.
