Field Hockey Upsets Monmouth, Advances to Conference Championships

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes scored early and closed the one-goal game with a strong defense to upset the second-seeded Monmouth in the America East semifinal, Friday evening.
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "Fantastic effort by our team today! We knew we had a big challenge today and it would take everything we had. Our girls' mental focus was tremendous under very stressful situations."
 
KEY STATS
  • Freshman Blanca Orsola scored her second goal of the season for the eventual game-winning goal.
  • This game is the fourth straight contest the Great Danes won by just one goal, the ninth on the season.
  • Monmouth outshot UAlbany, 11-4, but all of the Great Danes' shots were on goal, matching the Hawks' four shots on goal.
  • Four Great Danes tallied a shot - Orsola, junior Julie Rodijk, sophomore Charlotte Triggs, and freshman Isabella Del Vecchio.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Lara Behn made four saves to tally her second shutout of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks started with a fire, tallying their first shot in less than a minute - saved by the Great Dane goalkeeper, Lara Behn.
  • At 8:29, Blanca Orsola tallied the only goal of the contest. Receiving the ball from outside the circle, Orsola took a couple of steps to move the goalie and went for the opposite side of the net.
  • Monmouth earned the first penalty corner of the game, and only one of the first half, before the end of the first quarter.
  • UAlbany held the advantage in shots during the second quarter, 2-1.
  • The Hawks dominated the second half, tallying seven shots and three penalty corners, but the Great Danes held off their advantage to secure the upset and move on to the America East championship.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will move on to the America East Championships Sunday, November 7, competing against the first-seed, Maine, at 1 p.m.
