Field Hockey Goes to Shootouts at Maine

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes tied the game in the third quarter before taking the contest into shootouts with a 1-1 score. First-seeded Maine closed the first round of shootouts with a 2-1 advantage to take the America East Championship title, Sunday afternoon.
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "I am so proud of our team's effort today. We played extremely well under tremendous adversity. They had probably the biggest home crowd for an America East final. The atmosphere was great! For anyone watching that game, they got to see a very well-played final by both teams."
 
KEY STATS
  • Sophomore Charlotte Triggs tallied the lone UAlbany goal in the third quarter.
  • Three Great Danes totaled a team-high of three shots - freshmen Isabella Del Vecchio, Floor de Ruiter, and Triggs.
  • Overall, UAlbany outshot Maine, 17-11 with an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Lara Behn made five saves in 80 minutes of play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game remained scoreless throughout the first quarter. Holding possession for much of the first 15 minutes of play, the Great Danes held a 5-1 advantage in shots.
  • The Black Bears pushed on offense during the second quarter, taking six shots to UAlbany's four. 
  • Maine gained a 1-0 lead with 14:08 on the second-quarter clock after earning a penalty stroke attempt.
  • Charlotte Triggs tied the score about halfway through the third quarter. In the seventh minute of the quarter, Triggs dribbled the ball into the circle and took the shot from just inside the line for the unassisted goal.
  • After a scoreless fourth quarter, the contest went into overtime.
  • Shots were tied throughout both overtime periods - 1-1 in OT1 and 2-2 in OT2.
  • The Black Bears made the first successful goal during the shootout, before adding a second.
  • Freshman Floor de Ruiter followed Maine's second successful shootout with a successful attempt of her own but the final Great Dane attempt was unsuccessful and the Black Bears took the shootout victory.
