SHORT STORY: The Great Danes started strong and continuously improved throughout their 3-0 defeat of Hartford, Friday night.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "I'm proud of how the team battled tonight. We worked this week to come out from the beginning and we were able to do that. We have a short break coming up before our first trip to New Jersey for another America East match."
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Danielle Tedesco led in both kills (12) and blocks (4) while also owning a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken totaled two team-highs with 14 digs and 19 receptions.
  • Junior Kamara Kelly and freshman Oren Abutbul followed Tedesco with eight kills each.
  • Junior Malea Stanton led as one of two setters with 19 assists.
  • Overall, UAlbany tallied six service aces. One each from senior Regan Wright, freshman Ellie Benedict, senior Anna Chalupa, Macken, Kelly, and Stanton.
  • As a team, the Great Danes outhit Hartford, .288-.088.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match began with back-and-forth points from the Great Danes and the Hawks until Hartford tallied three straight points to gain a 7-4 lead.
  • UAlbany came back to earn a 12-8 lead with four straight points before closing the set, 25-20, with three straight points.
  • The Great Danes opened the second set strong taking a 4-1 lead early on. 
  • UAlbany further advanced their lead with six straight points, served by Kamara Kelly, for a 14-8 lead. The Great Danes held on to their lead to take the set, 25-19.
  • For a third time, UAlbany started the set strong, gaining an 11-3 advantage with two point runs. 
  • Two additional four-point runs guaranteed the Great Danes the match as Anna Chalupa tallied the final point with a service ace.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes continue on the road with a Sunday afternoon contest at NJIT on October 10.
