Volleyball Finds Five-Set Victory at Sacred Heart

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes battled back and forth at Sacred Heart eventually taking the five-set match, Tuesday night.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD:
"The team came together well and fought through all five sets. We had steady offensive production from multiple positions and Malea [Stanton] did a great job distributing the ball. We had struggled previously in five-set matches and it's great to get the win!"
 
KEY STATS
  • Senior Grace Cozad tallied a double-double with 20 kills, a team-high, and 10 digs.
  • All five of the Great Danes' main attackers totaled double-digit kills - Cozad (20), senior Regan Wright (15), freshman Lilou Stegeman (14), freshman Oren Abutbul (13), and graduate student Danielle Tedesco (11).
  • Junior Malea Stanton stood as the sole setter for today's match; she tallied 60 assists.
  • Cozad served for the only Great Dane service ace.
  • Stegeman led the UAlbany blockers with 10 total blocks, including one solo block. 
  • Senior Charlotte Macken owned a team-high 31 digs against Sacred Heart.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Great Danes began the set with a kill from Grace Cozad but the Pioneers quickly gained a 5-3 lead.
  • Sacred Heart continued to grow their advantage, four points at 10-6 and five points at 16-11. Despite a scoring run from UAlbany, the Pioneers took the first set, 25-19.
  • Once again, the Great Danes opened with the first point but Sacred Heart gained the first two-point lead, 5-3.
  • Tallying two three-point scoring runs, UAlbany took back the lead, 6-5, and extended it to a three-point advantage, 11-8. 
  • The Pioneers tied the score at 15 but the Great Danes would not allow them to take back the lead, tying the set score, 1-1, after winning the second set, 25-22.
  • Sacred Heart jumped to a 6-2 lead to start the third set. 
  • Despite UAlbany coming within one point of a set tie twice (13-12 and 17-16), the Pioneers won the set, 25-22.
  • Sacred Heart tallied the first three points of the fourth set with the Great Danes tying the score at 6 before taking a 10-9 lead.
  • UAlbany continued to add to their lead, earning a 15-11 lead after a three-point scoring run before adding a third scoring run on the set for a 21-15 advantage.
  • The Great Danes continue with their lead to take the set, 25-19.
  • For the first set of the match, UAlbany earned the early lead, 3-0, before continuing for a 7-2 advantage in the fifth set.
  • The Great Danes held at least a three-point lead of the Pioneers to take the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes return home to host two games over the weekend - Friday, October 29 and Sunday, October 31.
