SHORT STORY: UAlbany won one set but the visiting UMBC took the 3-1 win, Friday night.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "It was a great battle tonight. I'm proud of how the team came out and executed. We made a couple of mistakes here and there and UMBC capitalized. We definitely have things to work on and we will do that Monday at practice."
KEY STATS
- Senior Regan Wright led the team in kills, totaling 15 for the match.
- Wright led UAlbany with a .278 hitting percentage, followed closely by senior Grace Cozad with a .235.
- Wright and Cozad led the Great Danes with 16.5 and 16 points, respectively.
- Junior Malea Stanton totaled 34 assists for a team-high.
- Senior Charlotte Macken totaled 16 digs, followed closely by Cozad with 13.
- Freshman Lilou Stegeman led the team with seven blocks, including the only Great Dane solo block of the match.
- Three different UAlbany student-athletes tallied service aces against the Retrievers. Freshman Ellie Benedict, Cozad, and Stegeman each totaled two for the team's six aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UAlbany opened the first set with a kill by Grace Cozad before taking a 3-1 lead.
- The two teams rallied back and forth for the remainder of the set, until UMBC took the lead, and eventual win, with two kills from Mia Bilusic.
- Both teams exchanged leads in the second set, neither team leading by more than three points.
- Late in the second set, a Cozad kill, assisted by Malea Stanton, gave the lead back to the Great Danes, 21-20.
- UAlbany fought back from a five-point deficit in the third set to tie the score at 17, eventually sending the match into extra points.
- The Great Danes won the third set, 29-27, with a kill by graduate student Danielle Tedesco.
- A kill from Oren Abutbul, assisted by Stanton, began a five-point scoring run for UAlbany in the fourth set.
- Cozad tied the score at 19-19 with a kill, but UMBC went on a scoring run to win the set, 25-20, taking the match, 3-1.
NEXT: The Great Danes will head to Sacred Heart on Tuesday, October 26 before returning home with two games next weekend - NJIT (Friday, Oct. 29) and New Hampshire (Sunday, Oct. 31).
