SHORT STORY: Host, Hartford, won the first set but UAlbany took the road victory winning sets two, three, and four, Sunday evening.
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "It was a great comeback win tonight. We came into a tough second half of this road trip a little flat but we were able to turn it around in sets two-four. I'm proud of how the defense was able to slow Hartford's production and turn those digs into points."
KEY STATS
- Freshman Oren Abutbul led the Great Dane offense, tallying 18 kills with a .500 hitting percentage against the Hawks.
- Senior Grace Cozad and graduate student Danielle Tedesco followed with 10 kills each.
- On defense, senior Charlotte Macken owned a team-high 18 digs while freshman Lilou Stegeman and Tedesco tied with four blocks each.
- Important as ever, junior Malea Stanton set up the team's kills with 28 assists.
- UAlbany outhit Hartford, .288-.167.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks jumped to a lead early on earning a 7-4 advantage after tallying the first point of the match.
- The Great Danes came back to tie the set at 11 before going on a five-point scoring run for a 17-14 lead but Hartford came back to win the set, 25-23.
- UAlbany took the first point of the second set but the Hawks gained the first true lead, 3-1.
- Beginning with a kill from Oren Abutbul, the Great Danes stole the lead with a seven-point scoring run and a second run for three points. Up 13-5, UAlbany continued towards a 23-10 lead with a four-point scoring run.
- Hartford attempted to come back, going 10-1, but the Great Danes finished the set with a 25-20 win.
- Once again, UAlbany tallied the first set point, eventually earning a 7-3 advantage.
- Two uninterrupted scoring runs, one for seven points and the second for five, and the Great Danes had earned a 22-12 lead. Six volleys later, UAlbany won their second set, 25-15.
- The fourth, and final, set began with back-and-forth action as the Great Danes took the first real lead after a three-point run (10-8). Hartford took the lead right back, 11-10, before the teams continued with back-and-forth volley wins.
- Late in the set, UAlbany tallied a four-point scoring run for a 22-18 lead that would lead to the 25-22 set win, taking the match, 3-1.
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home for a Friday night game against UMBC on October 22.
