Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle at New Hampshire

SHORT STORY: UAlbany and host, New Hampshire, traded set wins before the Wildcats took home the five-set match win, Friday night.
 
COACH JOSH PICKARD: "It was a tough match for the Great Danes tonight. I'm very proud of our two right sides, Oren [Abutbul] and Danielle [Tedesco]. Grace Cozad did a nice job for us off the bench. Going on the road in this conference is difficult and [New Hampshire] played tough tonight."
 
KEY STATS
  • Freshman Oren Abutbul led the team with 20 kills and a .459 hitting percentage as well as tallying the second-highest amount of blocks - six.
  • Freshman Anissia Wong followed her classmate with a .286 hitting percentage and tied with six blocks.
  • Junior Malea Stanton held a slight lead in assists (30) over freshman Elaina Wamhoff (25). The setter also tallied a team-high 13 digs and two service aces.
  • Senior Charlotte Macken followed close behind with 12 digs.
  • Freshman Lilou Stegeman, returning to the court, led the team with seven blocks against New Hampshire.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wildcats came out strong tallying an early 4-1 lead. Point-wins continued back-and-forth with a slight New Hampshire lead until the Great Danes tied the score at 12.
  • UAlbany kept up with the Wildcats, consistently tallying the tying point but New Hampshire pulled away at the end of the set for a 25-22 set win.
  • Much like the first, the Wildcats pulled away early with a 6-3 lead.
  • Remaining behind New Hampshire for much of the set, the Great Danes tied the score at 17. Anissia Wong and junior Kamara Kelly jumped up for a block that won the 25-23 set.
  • This time around, UAlbany scored the first point, earning a 3-1 early lead but New Hampshire quickly came back eventually taking a 6-4 lead. 
  • The Wildcats continued with the close advantage before taking off with a seven-point run that the Great Danes were unable to come back from.
  • Once again, UAlbany tallied the first point but New Hampshire totaled the first two-point lead with their fifth point. 
  • The point differential remained below two until the Great Danes earned a 12-9 in the middle of a five-point scoring run. 
  • UAlbany persisted, eventually gaining as high as a seven-point advantage (20-13) before the Wildcats attempted to take the set back. New Hampshire did close the scoring gap but the Great Danes took the fourth set, 25-23, tying the match, 2-2. 
  • For the third-straight set, UAlbany tallied the first point, holding the lead until the Wildcats' seventh point when they took a 7-6 advantage.
  • New Hampshire went on an 8-2 scoring run to take the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes are back in action on Sunday, October 17, at Hartford.
