Baseball Splits Doubleheader against Manhattan

Short Story: Cregg Scherrer threw eight innings for the second-straight start and Marc Wangenstein hit his first home run of the season as UAlbany split the doubleheader against Manhattan College.

Recap
The University at Albany baseball team visit Manhattan at Iona College, due to poor field conditions at Manhattan's home site, and split the series-opening doubleheader. The Great Danes took game one, 5-2, and Manhattan took game two, 8-3. The doubleheader featured four home runs, all solo.

Jason Bottari led off game one of the doubleheader with a single. Three hitters later, Alex Thul hit an RBI single to give the Great Danes an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, left-handed freshman Cregg Scherrer struck out the leadoff hitter before Sam Franco hit a solo home run to tie the game 1-1.

After two-straight scoreless innings, UAlbany scored one run in four-straight innings unanswered. In the fourth inning, Nick Kondo scored after Marc Wangenstein struck out but had to be put out at first base. In the fifth inning, Dolan Ocasal and Brad Malm singled and Thul drove in Ocasal with an RBI single.

In the sixth inning, Wangenstein tripled to lead off and John Daly drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Alex Thul recorded his third RBI of the game in the seventh with a double that drove in Malm, giving the Great Danes a 5-1 lead. During the four-inning stretch, Scherrer allowed three baserunners.

After a scoreless eighth and top of the ninth, Manhattan's Matt Padre hit a solo home run in the bottom half against relief pitcher Jamie Silverberg. The next two Jasper hitters were retired and UAlbany held on to win 5-2.

The victory marked Scherrer's second career victory and second-straight game throwing eight innings allowing one run or less.

UAlbany and Manhattan led off game two with a hitless first inning, followed by a hitless top of the second by the Great Danes. The Jaspers took their first lead of the day in the bottom half when a sacrifice fly drove in Padre, giving Manhattan a 1-0 lead.

After the Great Danes were sent down in order, the Jaspers struck again in the bottom of the third. After the leadoff hitter reached on an error, Franco hit a double, advanced to third and scored on the same play due to Great Dane errors, giving Manhattan a 3-0 lead.

Bottari led off the fourth inning with a walk, followed by Ocasal reaching on an error. After Bottari advanced to third on a wild pitch, Malm drove in UAlbany's first run. Thul reached on an error and Wangenstein hit an RBI single to cut the Manhattan lead to 3-2. In the bottom half, Manhattan loaded the bases with two outs but Weber escaped the jam with a flyout.

After a leadoff single by Matt Soloman was the only Great Danes baserunner in the fifth inning, Manhattan added insurance runs. In the bottom half, Manhattan hit a two-run double, one-run triple and scored on an error to take a 7-2 lead.

Manhattan added another run in the bottom of the sixth when MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Nick Cimillo hit a solo home run, giving the Jaspers an 8-2 lead. Wangenstein hit UAlbany's first home run of the 2020 season in the top of the seventh, cutting the Manhattan lead to 8-3.

His home run was the last run and Manhattan sealed the 8-3 victory behind starting pitcher T.J. Stuart's complete game.
