Closing out play at the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida, the University at Albany softball team notched a 7-6 victory over Manhattan on Sunday. The Great Danes finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Pacing the Great Danes' offense once again was Petrella, who ended the contest with four RBIs. For the second straight day the freshman hit a home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth. Petrella then followed up the home run with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Jaspers got on the board first in the top of the second after a leadoff hit eventually came around to score on a single and throwing error.
Barkevich quickly tied the contest up at one in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with her first home run of the season.
Manhattan scored a pair in the top of the third on an RBI triple and a RBI single.
Down 3-1 entering the bottom of the third, the Great Danes inched closer with a run. After Petty doubled, advanced to second on an error and third on a groundout, Barkevich brought her home on a sac fly.
The Great Danes took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs. Petrella hit a two-run shot driving in Petty after she singled, and then tacked on another run on an error.
Petrella kept up her stellar play at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, driving in
Alexis Phillips and Petty after they each tallied back-to-back singles, making it a 7-3 game.
Manhattan made it a 7-6 game in the top of the seventh after multiple errors prolonged the inning. The Jaspers had the tying and go-ahead run on base, but Jimenez secured the save getting the last batter to flyout.
