Short Story: UAlbany baseball won its first two games of the 2020 season by sweeping a doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore, erasing two-run deficits in both games.
Coach Mueller: "Very nice step for the team today. Tremendous defensive effort collectively and good job on the mound overall. It's week two and it is going to take trial and error to get to the finish line. Offensively, we are a work in progress."
Game One
- John Daly and Dolan Ocasal each recorded two RBIs
- Ocasal hit 2-4 with a walk and run scored along with his two RBIs
- Ray Weber pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
- Joe Kruszka threw two innings allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts
- Hunter Torres picked up his first win of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief
- Maryland Eastern Shore's Dwayne Walker pitched five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Game Two
- Alex Thul went 1-4 with three RBIs
- All-five of UAlbany's runs were scored by different players
- Nick Kondo and Brad Malm each walked twice
- Cregg Sherrer allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts
- Kenny McLean threw two scoreless innings of relief allowing only one hit with three strikeouts
- Maryland Eastern Shore's Marcus Brown went 1-3 with a home run
Recap
The University at Albany baseball team swept the doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore by a game one score of 7-4 and game two score of 6-3. UAlbany won both games despite trailing by at least one run in the fourth inning or later in each.
The Great Danes trailed by two runs on three separate occasions in the third, fourth and fifth innings of game one. UAlbany trailed 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 respectively before tying the game in the sixth inning.
With runners on second and third in the top of the sixth,
Matt Soloman hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to pull within a run. The next at bat,
John Daly hit a pinch-hit RBI double, driving in
Jason Bottari, tying the game 4-4.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Great Danes struck for three more runs. Daly hit a sacrifice fly to give UAlbany its first lead of the game, 5-4. With the bases loaded in the inning,
Dolan Ocasal drove in Soloman and
Chris Fisher to give the Great Danes a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, coach
Jon Mueller turned to
Joe Kruszka for a six-out save. He allowed a harmless two-out single in the eighth but allowed the first two hitters to reach in the ninth.
With runners on first and second, UAlbany turned a 5-4-3 triple play to seal the 7-4 game one victory.
The Great Danes started freshman Cregg Sherrer in game two, his second collegiate start. After a scoreless first inning, Maryland Eastern Shore's Marcus Brown hit a solo home run, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Sherrer retired the first two hitters in the bottom of the third, but gave up two runs in the inning. He allowed a two-out walk to advance to second on a balk, who was then driven in on an RBI single. The next batter hit an RBI double, giving Maryland Eastern Shore a 3-0 lead.
The Great Danes cut the Maryland Eastern Shore lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning through hustle and an error.
Brad Malm lead off the inning with a double and would score on an
Alex Thul groundout two hitters later. After Bottari singled, he stole second and third bases, and would score an unearned run on a throwing error.
In the fifth inning with two outs and Ocasal on second and Malm on first,
Marc Wangenstein hit an RBI single, tying the game 3-3.
After a scoreless sixth, the Great Danes troubled the Maryland Eastern Shore bullpen.
Josh Loeffler and
Nick Kondo led off the inning with a double and walk, respectively. After Ocasal moved the runners over, Malm was intentionally walked. With the bases loaded and one out, Wangenstein foul out. With two outs, Loeffler scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Kondo run on an error.
Alex Thul hit a one-run single giving the Great Danes a 6-3 lead.
In a harmless bottom of the seventh inning,
Kenny McLean was able to retired the Maryland Eastern Shore hitters in order, sealing the 6-3 victory and sweep of the doubleheader.
