Short Story: The University at Albany softball team improves to 3-0 in America East action following a 5-2 victory against Hartford on Sunday afternoon.
The Great Danes outscored the Hawks, 19-7, on the weekend and now sit in first place in the conference standings.
Highlights:
- Chelsea Henige went 2-for-3 at the plate today, as seven different Great Danes recorded hits.
- In the circle, Celeste Verdolivo (3.1 innings) earned her 10th win of the spring and second of the weekend. The senior has recorded double-digits wins in consecutive seasons at UAlbany.
- The Great Danes now hold a 43-11 advantage in the all-time series.
Game 1
The visitors took a 2-1 lead in the third inning but the duo of Chloe Lewis and Verdolivo combined to pitch four shutout innings the rest of the way top pick up the win.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, UAlbany saw a one-out rally load the basses following a single, a walk and a bunt. Katie Falotico delivered a deep fly ball to the fence in the center field, allowing Love Drumgole to tag from third and knot the score, 2-2.
The home team continued to rake at the plate, scoring three runs on three hits to take the lead for good in the sixth. Henige began the inning with a leadoff double before coming around to score on an outfield single by Maranda Jimenez. Three pitches later, Amelia Ely roped a two-bagger to right field, scoring one, before Shaye Swiatek notched a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 game.
Lewis retired the first five batters of the game before allowing a hit. Verdolivo recorded a strike out over the final 3.1 innings on her way to her 10th win of the season.
