UAlbany Takes Down SBU to Advance to Championship

Short Story: The UAlbany softball team took down #3 Stony Brook on Friday to advance to the championship game at noon on Saturday, May 12th against UMass Lowell.

How It Happened:

Game eight of the America East championship tournament remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. UAlbany's Chelsea Henige slammed a home run well beyond the fences at Bearcats Sports Complex and ran to home plate as her team awaited her, cheering her on. The Great Danes led 1-0 going into the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Amelia Ely and Aliyah Wade hit back-to-back singles, followed by McKenzie Bump's walk. With bases loaded, Katie Falotico hit a single to right field that brought Ely and Wade around to score and advanced Bump to third base. The Great Danes led by three runs in the top of the fifth.

Sarah Petzold and Kelly Barkevich hit back-to-back singles to center field. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Alexa Corben came in to pinch run for Petzold and Courtney Courtade pinch ran for Barkevich. Donna Conrad followed the lead and hit a single right down center field, bringing Alexa Corben around to score and putting Courtade on third base. Alexis Phillips came in to pinch run for Conrad and stole second base. Amelia Ely reached on an error by the pitcher as Courtade and Phillips both ran to home plate on the play, driving the score up 6-0.

Shaye Swiatek hit a single bunt in the bottom of the sixth. Chelsea Henige singled to center field, putting Swiatek on second. Kelly Barkevich drove a three-run homer to the left side that ended the game in a 9-0 UAlbany victory. This is the 30th win for the Great Danes this season.
