DURHAM, N.H. – Paula Heuser notched a goal and two assists for the Great Danes as the UAlbany field hockey team shut out UNH 4-0 to begin America Easy play.
Heuser scored the team's first goal and assisted the next two as UAlbany (6-4, 1-0 AE) earned its second consecutive four-goal victory. Maxi Primus earned the shutout in goal with three saves against New Hampshire (2-7, 0-1 AE). As team, UAlbany outshot UNH 16-5.
“It was a very good team effort today; every time we play UNH, it's going to be a battle,” said UAlbany head coach Phil Sykes. “Our girls were up for the challenge today.”
This is the fourth consecutive season that UAlbany has won its first America East game.
Frederike Helmke assisted Heuser's goal and scored one herself in the 56th minute. Megan Ma scored a goal late in the first half while Molly Mariano scored the final goal from Emily Fraser.
Lindsey Nerbonne put two shots on goal while Katie Audino had one. Kelsey Rubert got the loss in the cage with eight saves.
UAlbany got the early barrage on the goal against UNH, including Fraser sending two shots to the cage and Rudert stopping both.
In the 12th minute, Heuser passed the ball to Fraser right next to the cage for a shot with Rudert making the save. A second attempt by Dana Bozek seconds later also was saved. UAlbany picked up penalty corners after that attack; Helmke passed off to Heuser on a corner for the shot that got inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Primus defended well against a UNH opportunity as Audino and Nerbonne each got close range shots on the cage. Primus dove in front to stop the first, then dove right for the second to hold off a goal.
After a foul, Heuser moved around the half-circle and fired a pass towards the cage. Ma tipped the shot on her stick and into the middle of the cage for the goal, putting UAlbany up 2-0 in the 32nd minute. UAlbany took that score into halftime.
Heuser nearly added her second goal in minute 42 as her first attempt on the cage was blocked. She got the ball back and tried again, being saved by Rudert.
UAlbany picked up a penalty corner in the 56th minute. Heuser got the ball and passed down the center of the half-circle. Helmke put her stick down as the ball went off her stick and arced up into the cage for the goal, making it 3-0 UAlbany.
In the closing minutes, Fraser went down the end line and passed, pulling away the UNH goalie. Mariano scored on the close range shot as UAlbany went up 4-0, the eventual final score.
