Field Hockey Shuts Out Hofstra 4-0 In Season-Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – In the first game of the 2016 season, the ninth-ranked University at Albany field hockey team came away with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Hofstra University Pride, Friday afternoon at Alumni Turf.

With a well-balanced offensive attack, four different UAlbany players found the back of the cage. Meanwhile, the Great Danes' defense did not allow a single penalty corner, as senior goalkeeper Maxi Primus earned the shutout, recording six saves in the win.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” said Head Coach Phil Sykes. “Our preseason was in a little disarray, but we grew a lot from our scrimmages and I was impressed with how we battled today. “

“I think our defense played fantastic,” added Sykes. “Maxi and Jaclyn Hibbs played really well. We got into a few scary situations, but they kept their composure and got out of it.”

Freshman Emily Fraser put the Great Danes on the board seven minutes into the contest. Weaving through the defenders from the right corner, Fraser drew Hofstra goalkeeper Carys Swan out of the cage, and with a backhanded flick, UAlbany took a 1-0 lead.

In the 15th minute of play, sophomore Frederike Helmke made it 2-0 with her bullet to the back right corner of the goal from a penalty corner inserted by Kelsey Briddell.

The Great Danes stretched the margin to three with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Junior Anna Bottino took charge, firing a hard liner between two defenders for the unassisted goal.

The Pride had their best chance in the 50th minute, as Claudia Marin Samper shot on Primus who made the save. Marin Samper followed her shot and got another attempt off, but Helmke preserved UAlbany's shutout with a defensive save.

Briddell logged the Danes' final goal of the contest in the 64th minute, as she stole the ball away from Hofstra at the top of the circle and juked her way left and right through the defense, around sliding goalkeeper Lauren Saltus, and finishing the play with a strong forehanded goal.

UAlbany outshot Hofstra 16-10 with four penalty corner opportunities.

Up next the Great Danes host Bryant University Sunday at 1 p.m.
