BOX ONE I BOX TWO
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The hosting Bryant Bulldogs (14-8) swept Saturday's doubleheader over the University at Albany (4-14) baseball team, winning game one's seven-inning contest 6-0 and the nightcap's five-inning affair 14-4. Due to inclement weather, the second game was cut short and Sunday's series finale has been cancelled.
GAME ONE
Bryant's Kevin McAvoy (3-1) struck out 12 and tossed a complete-game shutout in game one, earning the win. For UAlbany, Matt Gallup (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) and eight hits in 2.1 innings on the hill. Out of the bullpen, Andrew Jaurique and Cameron Sorgie held Bryant scoreless the rest of the way.
Recording six hits as a team, senior Brian Bullard led the Great Danes, going 3-for-3 at the plate.
Bryant scored two runs in the second inning and four in the third. In the second, a leadoff fielding error and a hit batter started the frame, and Brandon Bingel followed with an RBI single to right. Carl Anderson made it 2-0 with an RBI double down the left field line.
In the third, the Bulldogs batted through the order and strung together six consecutive hits for a total of four runs.
UAlbany's best chance to spoil the shutout came in the fifth when Garret Longhurst made it to third, reaching on a fielding error, advancing to second with a stolen base, and to third on Alex Lushkevich's single. However, he was left stranded when McAvoy drew the groundball out to end the side.
GAME TWO
In the nightcap, Bryant took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Anderson and John Mullen lined back-to-back singles at the top of the order before an error allowed Anderson to score. Buck McCarthy, Daniel St. George, and Bingel also had RBI singles in the inning.
UAlbany scored its first run of the afternoon in the top of the second, as Cory Kingston, Jeff VonMoser, and Adam Mund drew consecutive walks to load the bases. With one out, Richard Bacon took one for the team, bringing in Kingston from third. However, Bryant's starting pitcher Kyle Wilcox got out of the jam with a double-play ball.
Bryant added five runs in the bottom of the fifth, using four walks, a hit batter, and a fielding error to their advantage. With the bases loaded, McCarthy lined a bases-clearing double to left, capping the inning.
The Great Danes made the score 9-3 in the fourth, plating two runs. D.J. Hoagboon drew a leadoff walk, stole two bases, and scored on a wild pitch. VonMoser also reached on a walk and scored on Mund's RBI groundout.
After Bryant got both runs back during their fourth inning at-bats, UAlbany added a run in the fifth. With one out, Craig Lepre singled through the left side, breaking up Wilcox's no-hitter, and Evan Harasta knocked him home with a double to left centerfield, making the score 11-4.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs plated three runs before the game was called with one out and a runner on first because of rain.
Wilcox (1-0) earned the win for Bryant, throwing all five innings. Andrew Veiga (0-2) took the loss for UAlbany, allowing four runs (one earned) and six hits in 1.1 innings. Stephen Woods threw 2.2 frames in relief, allowing seven runs (three earned), three hits, and struck out three. Joey Moore was on the mound in the fifth when the came was called.
