BOX SCORE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In an error-plagued afternoon amidst rain and wind conditions, the University at Albany baseball team suffered a 13-3 defeat at Bryant University Friday. The Great Danes committed a season high eight errors in the first clash of the weekend's four-game series with the Bulldogs, as 10 of Bryant's 13 runs were unearned.

On the mound for UAlbany, sophomore Brendan Ryan (0-1) took the loss, tossing 4.1 innings. He was credited eight runs, two of which were earned, five hits, three walks, and one strikeout. Classmate Sam DeCelle threw two-thirds of the fifth, while J.T. Genovese hurled the final three frames, allowing four runs (one earned), four hits, two walks, and struck out three.

For Bryant, Craig Schlitter (4-1) earned the win, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings of work, while striking out five.

Offensively, UAlbany totaled eight hits, while Bryant finished with 10. Junior Craig Lepre led the Great Danes at the plate with two doubles (2-for-5), two runs batted in, and a run scored. Senior D.J. Hoagboon (2-for-4) and junior Alex Lushkevich (2-for-3) also had multi-hit performances, as Lushkevich logged the Danes' other RBI of the game.

In the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs set the tone with a four-run head start. John Mullen started things off with a double and scored on Jordan Mountford's RBI single to left centerfield. Two fielding errors sandwiched around Tom Gavitt's two-run scoring triple gave Bryant a 4-0 advantage.

UAlbany cut the deficit in half in the top of the third, as Jeff VonMoser reached with one out on a hit by pitch and Charlie Peltz singled to right-center. With two on, Lepre ripped a two-run scoring double to right, but was called out at third, trying to leg it into a triple.

Bryant answered in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run after back-to-back walks, a throwing error and a fielding error, all with two outs.

In the fifth, the Bulldogs added four more runs (one earned), taking a 9-2 lead, stringing together four hits, as well as used a hit batter and two errors to their advantage.

Bryant tacked on three more unearned runs in the sixth, before the Great Danes got back on the board in the top of the eighth. UAlbany made the score 12-3, as Lepre lined his second double of the afternoon and Lushkevich brought him home with a single to left field.

However, the Bulldogs made the final statement, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth, coupling a pair of singles.

UAlbany (4-12) and Bryant (12-8) continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 11 a.m. The two of seven-inning games were originally scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but have been moved up due to impending inclement weather.
