BOX ONE I BOX TWO
YAPHANK, N.Y. – Playing at Baseball Heaven, a neutral site in Yaphank, N.Y. due to inclement weather in Albany, the University at Albany baseball team split Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader with Marist College. UAlbany (4-8) won the first game of the day, 3-0, but the Red Foxes (5-11) took the nightcap, 7-4. Both contests were seven innings.
Ryan Stinar and Sam DeCelle tossed a combined shutout, limiting Marist to just three hits total. Stinar struck out four and allowed just one hit in the first three innings. DeCelle (1-0) earned the win, tossing the final four frames and recorded five strikeouts.
Offensively, UAlbany totaled six hits, led by senior Brian Bullard's 2-for-3 effort with two RBI and a run scored.
The Great Danes scored one run in the first, as Bullard reached base on a walk and scored on a passed ball, and in the second inning, Adam Mund singled and scored on Bullard's RBI single with two outs, giving the Danes a 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, pinch hitter Jeff VonMoser reached base after getting plunked, and Bullard again came through at the plate with an RBI single, handing the Danes a 3-0 advantage.
In the nightcap, UAlbany and Marist traded runs in the first inning, as both teams scored two. For the Red Foxes, Zach Passerelle knocked a two-run homer off UAlbany starter Andrew Veiga. However, the Danes answered back, taking advantage of two walks, a wild pitch, and a passed ball. Josh Nethaway notched an RBI off a fielder's choice, and Craig Lepre lined an RBI single, plating Nethaway.
Marist built a 6-2 lead, scoring one run in the second and three runs in the third, using four walks and a hit by pitch to their advantage.
The Great Danes responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, cutting the deficit to two, also using four walks in their favor. However, Marist tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and held the Danes at bay the rest of the way.
On the mound, Veiga (0-1) took the loss, throwing the first two innings. Andrew Jaurique, Joe Romero, and Joey Moore also saw time on the hill. For Marist, Evan Davis (1-3) earned the win, tossing three innings of middle relief.
Up next, UAlbany returns to conference play, traveling to take on Stony Brook in a three game series Saturday and Sunday.
