UAlbany Drops Road Match to Syracuse 4-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a tough night for the UAlbany women's soccer team at the SU Soccer Stadium as the Great Danes fell to Syracuse 4-0 on Friday.
UAlbany (1-2-0) held early against a couple of shots from Erin Simon in the first five minutes. Twice Simon shot outside the box and missed wide on each attack.
In minute 12, Syracuse (2-1-0) tried to cross the ball from the left side, but goalie Dani Britt punched the ball away to prevent a shot attempt.
Britt stopped another chance around the 20th minute as Syracuse tried to pass to a breakaway player in the box, but Britt slid and hugged the ball to prevent a shot.
UAlbany had its first decent look in the 26th minute. Krista Fitzpatrick looked for a teammate on a pass into the box, but kicked it deep as goalkeeper Brittany Anghel picked it up on the bounce. A couple minutes later, a counterattack found Kari Quinn with the ball one-on-two near the box, but her defender kicked it away to stop a possible shot.
In the 29th minute, Simon went towards the back line, got around a defender and scored on the right side of the goal, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
In a span of three minutes, Syracuse got a trio corner kick opportunities, but UAlbany's defense held on each attempt and kept the deficit at one. The score remained 1-nil Orange at halftime.
The Orange got a couple of opportunities early in the second half, but three times in the first seven minutes, Britt stopped a couple of passes before a shot attempt.
Simon got loose in the 57th minute around a defender, getting to the edge of the box and kicking the ball into the net for her second goal. The Orange led 2-0.
UAlbany earned a free kick straight away outside the box in the 65th minute. Stephanie Nelle went for the direct kick, but the shot went high.
With under 20 minutes left, a Stephanie Skilton shot was saved by Britt. UAlbany looked to counterattack; Allison Carhart's shot got past the keeper by deflected by a defender and kicked away. The Orange went the other way, with Skilton heading a Taylor Haenlin cross into the net to put the Orange up 3-0.
Britt got a goal kick to the right-most third of the field, finding Aubrey VanGorder. VanGorder turned and fired the ball, which misses the goal wide right.
Syracuse attacked in the 81st minute, and off a deflection from the post, Simon scores on a shot from right-to-left past a diving Britt to put the home team up 4-0.
The Great Danes nearly got a goal in the 85th minute as Alexa Schneider got a nice head shot, but Anghel got a hand on the ball for the save.
UAlbany pushed but could not get another shot off and fell in the match to Syracuse 4-0.
Four different players took shots for UAlbany, with VanGorder and Schneider earning shots on goal.
For the Orange, Simon finished with a hat trick on five shots.
Next Friday, September 6th, UAlbany will head to New Rochelle, New York to take on Iona for a 3 p.m. game.
