ALBANY, N.Y. -- Six minutes into the overtime period, Michigan's Lauren Thomas scored on a penalty corner to lead the 15th-ranked Wolverines to a 2-1 win over #21 UAlbany in non-conference field hockey action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. UAlbany falls to .500 on the season with a 2-2 record.
Michigan scored first in the 22nd minute of play, as Emy Guttman passed the ball into the circle, where Rachael Mack got a stick on it, slipping it past UAlbany goalkeeper Kristi Troch. The Wolverines held onto their 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half, and were looking towards a one-goal victory when UAlbany tied the score with 39 seconds on the clock.
In a scramble in front of the cage, Chantae Miller tipped the ball to Daphne Voormolen, who found the back of the net to score the equalizer. The teams battled as the seconds wound down, but there wasn't enough time on the clock for either squad to score.
After almost seven minutes of play in the extra period, Michigan converted a penalty corner attempt to earn the sudden victory. Shannon Scavelli handed the ball off to Thomas, who hit the back of the cage.
UAlbany controlled the stat sheet, outshooting the Wolverines, 22-13, and holding a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.Troch made five saves for the Great Danes, while Haley Jones stopped 11 shots between the pipes for Michigan (3-2).
UAlbany will return to action on Sunday, taking on #7 Connecticut at 2 p.m. at Alumni Turf Field. Michigan and UConn will play a neutral site game on the Great Danes' home turf on Saturday, also at 2 p.m.
