Albany, N.Y. - Jeffrey Gibbs went seven innings with four
strikeouts to lead Maine to a 4-2 win over UAlbany in America East Conference
baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. The game, which completed
a three-game weekend series between the two teams, dropped UAlbany to 16-28-1
overall, 10-7 in conference play, while Maine improved to 23-21 overall, and
9-6 in league play.
Maine got on the board first with a single run in the top
of the third inning. Troy Black singled to right center and stole second to
move into scoring position. Mike Fransoso singled up the middle to send Black
home and give Maine a 1-0 lead. The Great Danes got on the board in the bottom of
the sixth, as D.J. Hoagboon tripled down the right field line and scored on a
wild pitch.
UAlbany took a 2-1 lead in the next inning, as Jeff
Welsh, who singled up the middle to lead off the inning, came home on a wild
pitch. The Great Danes held onto the one-run lead until the top of the ninth,
until the Black Bears loaded the bases on two singles and a hit-by-pitch, and a
walk issued to Colin Gay brought in the tying run. Sam Balzano singled through
the right side to send two runners home and give Maine the 4-2 win.
Austin Chase went seven innings for UAlbany, scattering
six hits while striking out four. Greg Lutton took the loss on the mound for
the Great Danes after one and two thirds innings with three earned runs
allowed. D.J Voisine tossed the final two innings for Maine, striking out one.
Mike Tirri and Brian Bullard each finished with two hits
for UAlbany, with both of them knocking out a double in the game. Gay and Black
led Maine with three hits apiece.
UAlbany will return to action on Wednesday, hosing
Hofstra at 3 p.m.
