Softball Defeats Stony Brook In Season Finale, 7-4

Stony Brook, N.Y.- Charlise Castro's 2-for-2 performance that included a two-run homer led UAlbany over Stony Brook, 7-4, in the season finale on Sunday, May 6 at University Field. The Great Danes finish out the season 34-12 overall and 13-5 in the America East Conference.

Charlise Castro, Vicky McFarland and Alexa Toole all hit home runs, combining to go for 4-for-8 with five runs batted in and four runs scored. Castro's 13th home run and 51st and 52nd RBIs added to her possible America East Conference Triple Crown.

Brittany MacFawn (18-5) went four strong innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out six. Brittany Schwieger came in for three innings of relief to earn her first career save, allowing three runs on five hits.

UAlbany (34-12, 13-5 AE), after struggling to score runs against Stony Brook's pitcher Allison Cukrov, was able score early and in a bunch. In the top of the third and two outs, McFarland drew a walk, Diane MacDowell recorded an RBI-double, Taylor Franich followed with an RBI-single and Castro capped the inning off with a two-run home run to left center.

Stony Brook (35-16-1, 14-3-1 AE) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun from Bernadette Tenuto. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Jessica Comb's cut into the Danes lead with an RBI-single, 6-2.

The Great Danes added on insurance runs in the fourth with a two-run homer from Alexa Toole and a solo homer from McFarland in the seventh.

The Seawolves looked to create a rally in the bottom of the seventh with the first four batters to reach base and shortstop Maloney with an RBI-single. But Schweiger would get the number 7-8-9 batters in order to shut the door for her first career save.

UAlbany will now prepare for the America East Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed, which begins on Thursday, May 10. The Great Danes will either face Stony Brook or Boston U. in the semifinals.
