West Hartford, Conn.- Softball hits six homeruns en route to winning its first two games of the three game series against Hartford on Saturday, April 7. Kylie Apostolina recorded her fifth and sixth homeruns of the season to give UAlbany its longest winning streak of the season at 10.
In game one, Brittany MacFawn (12-3) won her sixth straight start, going five innings and just allowing one run on six hits and striking out nine.
UAlbany (23-7, 7-1 AE) opened game one with five runs in the first three innings. Alexa Toole hit her first homerun of the season in the top of the second then Charlise Castro followed in the top of the third with her 10th of the season to go up 4-0.
Hartford would string three consecutive singles and followed up with an RBI ground out by third baseman Kelly to cut into the deficit, 5-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
The Great Danes would come back and score five more runs, two of which came in the top of the fifth to reach the run-rule to take game one. Castro finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a double in the top of the fifth which drove in Diane MacDowell for the Danes 10th run.
Game two, Brittany Schwieger (10-2) would follow up MacFawn's performance with her first complete-game shutout of the season. Schwieger would pitch five innings, allowing just one hit and walking two while striking out eight. She wouldn't allow a baserunner passed second base.
UAlbany would repeat its offensive power surge from game one and score 12 in game two. Apostolina went 3-for-3 and hit two of the Great Danes four home runs in game two.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Great Danes would record six consecutive hits and score eight of the first nine batters in the inning.
UAlbany looks to extend its 10-game winning streak on Sunday, April 8 and record its second America East Conference three-game series sweep against Hartford.
