Ithaca, N.Y- Charlise Castro goes 4-for-4 and leads the charge in game one, as UAlbany defeats Cornell, 7-1, on Tuesday, April 3. Brittany Schwieger pitched six innings, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out 10 batters.
UAlbany (20-7, 5-1 AE) begun the top of the first with Castro's RBI-triple to drive in Taylor Franich. A double steal by Vicky McFarland and Alexa Toole in the top of the third put UAlbany up 2-0. Then in the fourth, UAlbany tallied three more runs highlighted with rbi singles by Katie Wambold and Mel Herndon to go up 5-0.
Cornell (12-13, 3-1 Ivy) looked to cut the deficit when Erin Belles hit a solo home run to center in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to four, 5-1.
Schwieger (9-2) would pitch out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth. Castro tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer to center to secure game one.
Cornell started off game two with back-to-back homeruns by Erin Keene and Erin Belles in the bottom of the second. Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Big Red extended its lead to 5-1 with three runs which included an rbi double from Katie Watts.
UAlbany stormed back with three runs in the top of the fifth then two more in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5. Mel Herndon began the sixth with a lead-off single, Kylie Apostolina followed with an rbi triple to right field then Alexa Toole hit into a fielder's choice to score Apostolina.
The Great Danes would open the extra-inning frame with two more runs to go up, 8-6. With the extra-inning beginning with a runner at second, Castro hit an rbi double, Herndon sacrifice bunt then Apostolina with an rbi single.
Brittany MacFawn (10-3) would shut the door in the final two innings to preserve the win in game two.
UAlbany continues the 2012 season with a non-conference doubleheader against Colgate on Wednesday, April 4.
