UAlbany Baseball Splits With Stony Brook; Hoagboon Drives In Winning Run In Game Two

Albany, N.Y. - It took an extra inning, but UAlbany recorded a 7-6 win over Stony Brook in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. D.J. Hoagboon knocked in the winning run with a base hit up the middle, sending Jeff Welsh home for the walk-off victory. The Great Danes fought back in game one, but were unable to come all the way back, falling to the Seawolves, 6-4.

Stony Brook came out firing in Sunday's nightcap, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Seawolves then added a single run in the third, before UAlbany cracked into the scoring column with a solo run in the fourth. Stony Brook then plated another run in the fifth to hole a 5-1 advantage before the Great Danes started climbing back. Craig Lepre belted a two-run double into center field in the sixth before an RBI single by Mike Tirri in the seventh pulled UAlbany to within 5-4. Stony Brook scored a single run in the top of the eighth, but the Great Danes got an RBI double by Gordon Madej and a base hit by Nolan Gaige that sent the tying run home in the bottom of the inning.

After a scoreless ninth, relief pitcher Ryan White allowed a lead-off hit by Willie Carmona, but got Josh Mason to hit into a double play in the next at bat. After a walk to Kevin Krause, Cole Peragine hit a fielder's choice that got Krause out at second and give the Great Danes another chance to seal up the victory. Welsh walked to start the inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Madej. After the Seawolves intentionally walked Lepre, Gaige got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hoagboon stepped to the plate to pinch hit and drove the ball up the middle, plating Welsh and securing the win.

White earned the win on the mound for the Great Danes after two and two thirds innings with just two hits and one strikeout. Willie Carmona took the loss for Stony Brook, entering the game in the 10th and allowing the winning run. Carmona led the Stony Brook offensively, going 4-for-5 with a home run. Tirri was the only Great Dane with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

In the early game, UAlbany struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, getting RBI singles from Tirri, Josh Nethaway and Joey Tracy. However, Stony Brook responded in the top of the fourth with a triple by Cole Paragine that scored two runs, before an RBI ground out brought Paragine home. The Seawolves added two more runs in the top of the fifth, before UAlbany got one run back in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4. Tanner Nivins sent Carmona home for a run in the top of the seventh to complete the Stony Brook scoring. Tirri led the bottom of the inning off with a double, and advanced to third, but was unable to make it home, giving the Seawolves the game-one victory.

Starter Zach Kraham took the loss for UAlbany on the mound, going six innings with four walks and one strikeout. Greg Lutton came in to close out the game, throwing the final inning and allowing just one hit while fanning one. James Campbell earned the win for Stony Brook with two strikeouts in two and a third innings of work.

UAlbany (9-24-1, AE 3-4) will return to action on Saturday, April 21, visiting UMBC for a four-game weekend series.
