Great Danes Get Swept By Stony Brook In America East Conference Baseball Twinbill

Albany, N.Y. - Stony Brook used strong performances from its starting pitchers to sweep UAlbany in an America East Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Seawolves won the first game, 9-2, before posting a 13-3 victory in the nightcap. UAlbany falls to 8-23-1 overall, with a 2-3 league record, while Stony Brook improves to 23-9 overall, 4-1 in conference play.

            In the early game, both teams got five innings out of their starters, with Tyler Johnson earning the win on the mound for the Seawolves. Johnson scattered eight hits and fanned three, without issuing a walk. Kasceim Graham took the loss for the Great Danes, as he struck out one opposing batter, walking three and allowing 11 hits. Josh Nethaway and D.J. Hoagboon led the UAlbany offense, as both went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Nethaway knocked out a double to score Hoagboon, while Jeff Welsh drove in the Great Danes' second run.

            Travis Jankowski went 3-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI for the Seawolves. Four other players finished with multiple hits, including Maxx Tissenbaum, who recorded an RBI-double, and Kevin Courtney, who also sent a runner home with an extra-base hit.

            In the nightcap, UAlbany centerfielder Nolan Gaige and shortstop Gordon Madej each recorded two hits to lead the Great Danes. Pinch hitter Joe Ilacqua knocked out a double for UAlbany's only extra-base hit of the game, while Greg Muller recorded an RBI-single to drive in a run. Stony Brook exploded for 17 hits in the game, getting three hits from three different players. Jankowski and Cole Paragine each recorded triples for the Seawolves, while four different players, including Paragine, recorded doubles.

            On the mound, UAlbany starter Sean Lucas went three and a third innings, fanning one and walking two. Brandon McNitt went seven innings with six strikeouts for Stony Brook. He scattered eight hits and did not issue a walk in the winning effort.

            The Great Danes and the Seawolves will play another doubleheader on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
