Softball Snaps Its 11-Game Win Streak Against Manhattan In Game One; Takes Game Two

Albany, N.Y.- UAlbany softball fell to Manhattan in game one, 3-1, but responded in game two with an 8-2 win on Wednesday, April 11 at Albany Field. Allie Weiser (2-2) had her best outing of the season in game two, allowing just one run on four hits in five innings en route to her second win of the season. Alexa Toole went 2-for-2 in UAlbany's game two win with her third home run of the season.

Game one featured a pitching duel between UAlbany's Brittany Schwieger and Manhttan's Kate Bowen. Both pitchers would toss three scoreless innings as UAlbany wouldn't have a base runner passed first and Manhattan would threaten in the top of the third but Schwieger would punch out the final two outs.

UAlbany (25-8) would score the games first run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up, 1-0. Diane MacDowell would reach on a fielder's choice, MacDowell stole second then was driven in with a Taylor Franich double to left center.

Manhattan (3-22) responded in the top of the sixth as Bowen helped out her own cause with a solo homerun to right center to tie the game, 1-1. The Jaspers would then tally two more in the top of the seventh with a two-run double to left from Mikayla Romero to snap UAlbany's 11-game winning streak.

Schwieger (10-3) went the distance, allowing just three runs of five hits while striking out a season-high 11.

UAlbany's bats would respond in game two by opening up with a three-run first to go up, 3-0. Vicky McFarland led off with triple to right, Franich reached on an error by the shortstop to score McFarland then Katie Wambold and Mel Herndon would hit consecutive rbi doubles to cap the run.

Manhattan's Megan McDevitt responded, in the top of the second, with a solo shot to left center to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.

The Great Danes would then follow with a run in the second and four more in fourth to extend the lead to seven, 8-1. Franich, MacDowell and Charlise Castro all had rbi singles in the four-run fourth.

The Jaspers mustered one more run in the top of the seventh as McDevitt led off with a double and was followed with a Jocelyn Whitmore rbi double down the left field line.

UAlbany will look to extend its America East Conference lead in a weekend series against Boston U. beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at Albany Field.
