Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Despite
rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, UAlbany was unable to complete the
rally, falling to Marist, 10-8, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon
at McCann Field. The Great Danes fall to 8-21-1 on the season with the loss.
Marist
kicked off the game with two runs in the first inning and four in the second,
and managed to hold onto the 6-0 lead until the fourth frame. The Great Danes
plated one run in the top of that inning, as Joey Tracy came home on a
sacrifice fly by DJ Hoagboon. The Red Foxes extended their lead, however,
responding with one run in the bottom of the fourth before scoring three times
in the fifth.
UAlbany
began to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth, getting four runs home. With
two outs, Josh Nethaway singled through the left side to send Tracy home for
the second time. Hoagboon then knocked a double into left field to score two
baserunners, and advanced to third on the throw to home. A bunt single down the
third base line by Gordon Madej scored Hoagboon to pull the Great Danes to
within 10-5. UAlbany plated a single run in the seventh, as Nolan Gaige tripled
and then stole home. In their final attempt to complete the comeback, the Great
Danes scored twice in the top of the ninth. Gaige scored his second run of the
day on an RBI groundout by Pete DiResta, while Nethaway pushed Tracy home for
the second time with a base hit to right center. However, a fielder's choice
had Nethaway out at second to end the rally.
Kevin
Archbold took the loss on the mound for UAlbany, going one and a third innings
with one strikeout. Ryan White tossed two innings in relief for a staff-best
two strikeouts. Brandon Dolan earned the win for the Red Foxes with a
four-inning, two-strikeout performance.
UAlbany
will return to action over the weekend, hosting Stony Brook in a four-game
series with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Varsity Field, starting at
1 p.m.
