Rock Hill, S.C- Sophomore pitcher Brittany McFawn (1-1) pitched seven quality innings, allowing just one unearned run and struck out 10 in the victory over Campbell, 2-1, while Allie Weiser would pitch seven strong of two-run ball to come up short against Gardner-Webb, 2-1. Head coach Chris Cannata recorded her 500th victory at UAlbany with the win over Campbell. The Great Danes go to 3-4 on the season and will play Winthrop and Bowling Green on Saturday, March 10 at the Adidas Invitational.
The Great Danes got on the board early in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally. After Kylie Apostolina grounded out to third and Charlise Castro struck out swinging, Mel Herndon slapped a single down the left field side. Following Herndon's single, Lauren Alcorn walked and then on a wild-pitch during Stephanie Talerico's at-bat, both runners advanced to second and third. Talerico would put the ball in ball and with a throwing error by Campbell's third baseman Kayla Womack, both runners would score and the inning would end with Talerico being thrown out by the catcher at second.
McFawn would cruise the next five innings tallying 10 strikeouts and would give up her only run in the top of the sixth, which was unearned, from a throwing error by Katie Wambold.
UAlbany's Allie Weiser and Gardner-Webb's Alyssa Guiterrez both got into a pitching duel, pitching no-run ball through four innings. Weiser didn't allow a baserunner past second through all four innings while Guiterrez got out of a jam in the third inning with UAlbany threatening with a runner on third after two throwing errors but finished the inning with no runs.
Gardner-Webb was the first to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a lead-off double from Lindsea Hutchinson, then she was followed by a sacrifice bunt from Brittany Morrow and capped by a two-run homer Mariana Gallardo.
UAlbany would look to respond in the bottom of the sixth as Diane McDowell lead off the inning with a single to left. Vicky MacFarland, up next, would slap a single to left center to give the Great Danes runners on first and second. With a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Franich to move the runners, Mel Herndon would drive in the Great Danes only run of the game on a fielder's choice to short and the inning would end with MacFarland stranded at third.
